I'm in the market for another precision rifle and I already have a LTR and a 700 in a AIC 2 stock. I'm running a poll on the precision forum for a new rifle and it looks like one of the gas guns is going to win. So if one of the ARs win which would you get?
I already have a Leupold Mark 4 scope just dying to be mounted to something. I'm looking for sub-moa out to 500 yds. I don't have a need for BUIS on this rifle or a $250 OPS brake. After the scope I have $1400 left in my budget. So lets hear from you.www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=6&f=5&t=177767

Spacegun. (National match course type AR)

You already know my vote. I'd pick the AR-10T over the DPMS though. You could likely build an AR-10T using an Eagle lower with standard trigger and Armalite upper for about 1200 clams. With the rest of the money you could upgrade to a KAC trigger.

I have to admit I like the SAM out of the .223 rifles.

If you throw Armalite in the mix my vote goes there.

However, the DPMS is a very value minded option.

Wouldn't it be nice to pick up a SR-25 in your price range?

Not sure yet because I've only been home a few days since I got it. I was able to get to the range one day and I shot it at 50 yards to get my BUIS dialed in. I did a quick zero with the Leupold and put 3 shots in an area about the size of a quarter. However, right after I moved to 100 yards it started pouring cats and dogs so I bailed out and went home. It's still too early to tell and I haven't been able to spend enough time with it yet. I was also shooting 55gr XM193 so I need to buy some 62gr when I get back home and spend a good day at the range breaking this thing in and getting it tight.

If you admittedly do not need BUIS or Ops Inc. brake, then scratch the SAM-R and SPR off your list. Considering the SPR uses both items you do not want and the SAM-R has the BUIS, why put the money into either one?

Do you own a rifle in to AR10 Platform?

No I don't have any Armaltes. I'm not opposed to the SPR or SAM. I just don't need BUIS and I can't see spending money like that just to be military correct. The same goes for the OPS. There's no chance of me getting a class 3 in Philadelphia so i can't see spending $250 on it when I could but alot of Black Hills ammo.

SPR, but that may change when I complete my SAM-R build. Best to date is 0.45" using handloaded 69gr SMKs.

I'm going to end the poll friday the 22nd. The poll for which one on the precision forum is neck and neck between the DPMS 308 LR and a AR15 varient.

All I hear are good things about it. If I hand loaded I would have to think about it. How are your groups past 100 yds?

The only long range shooting I have done was at a 6" swinging steel target at 450 yards. I was able to hit it every single time once I got the elevation right. That's not particularly impressive though, to see what it's really doing, I'm planning to shoot at paper at that range the next time I visit (it's in SC, I live in VA).

Is everybody out of the SPR barrel ?
Link Posted: 10/30/2004 9:25:42 AM EST
I say recce as well - though you would have to cut a few corners to keep it under $1400

That SAM-R you got from ADCO..thought I recogized that one... is that the one with the 20 1/2" barrel?

Link Posted: 10/30/2004 9:34:24 AM EST
18" barrel

Got my Wilson SPR barrel from ADCO last week. They say next batch is about a month out.

Hmmm, my post disappeared.

Anyways, with a SPR, what cartridge does it take? 5.56/.223? If so, and you're shooting out past 300+ yards, wouldnt it be ineffective? What's the "purpose" of the SPR?

Its "purpose" is to be a Special "Purpose" Rifle. It is accurized to score effective hits at longer than normal ranges.

In competent hands, a head shot at 600m would seem effective to me. I might venture a guess to say that you think that there isn't enough bullet velocity at those distances for bullets to fragment reliably, and you may be right, but getting lead into someone at that range may be effective by itself.
