Well, how bout it, a 20" or a 16" as your single upper you could have in a SHTH scenario? And while you're at it, a A1,A2, or A3, and a heavy or light barrel conture??? I know there is an article on the sight, but I wonder what everyonelse thinks.

14.5" fluted H-Bar on a flat-top upper with A-1 length fixed stock.

Id use my 16"..Easy to point and low swing weight.. But if stuff was that bad Id grab whatever.. A1, A2 whichever.. Just rather not die..

Depends on what SHTF. I will take 20" Gov't unless the SHTF is taking place in a relatively isolated area.

By SHTF, I more mean TEOTWAWKI, that is the end of the world as we know it. I mean a significant disturbance of the life of commerce and (relative) peace we know, anything from a severe depression like in the 30's or worse, with lots of civil unrest and anarchy, and you possibly having to travel alon or preferbly with a group of friends to survive or whatever.

I'm new, but I'll put my $0.02 in. A HB 16" like the DISSPENTOR(?sp) from Bushmaster. The shorter barrel helps in moving. The longer sight radius helps on the longer shots. I would not bother with long range shots, I would use a bigger caliber. But I'm wanting to slip inbetween patrols or BGs looking for me. Just my thoughts

Also, I would get the A2 with a HALO or other reddot site. I would have some aftermarket iron sites as well. Maybe some nitesites or a ghost ring.

thats a good suggestion, I don't know about that heavy barrel though, I think I would go with a 16" LW barrel with a midlength hand-guard. I dunno though, that 5.56 round tends to work well b/c of velocity, and I'd seriously think about the advantage of that extra 4" for velocity.

STRONG You're right about the LW barrel. I got my abbreviations mixed up. I guess the 20" would be better for my purposes. I just want to stay away from the BGs. The more range, the better. TAC>]:)

I've got a Colt AR15A3 (tactical carbine) that I beat on and shoot the heck out of. I would use it without hesitation even though it is a 16" (flattop).

In an end of the world scenario, we'll all be converting our AR's to full auto (well except for the people who bought Colt), so a 16" or shorter would be ideal.

16" HB A2 w/compact ACOG shooting Federal 69 gr SMK and M193

Sounds like I just bought the right rifle...16" HB A3 w/acog...Bring on the anarchy! [sniper]

(laughing to myself) By the end of all life do you mean like an asteroid hitting the earth and killing all life forms? If so I'm glad I have a 16" Chromed lined barrel on my Colt with M-33 Fobus handguards for my surefire light and vertical grip and plus..Trijicon ACOG TAO1 so that when things get icky I can wash it off so I it won't get yucky.

The question again has to be answered, what kind of SHTF or what kind of TEOTWAWKI has occured? If it was a global disaster where it ended up to all men to himslef to survive, do ya'll think I would care about any assault weapons laws to fight off anyone or anything. My options of using my semi-auto postban 16" or 20" rifles has just increased to something like a M249 SAW if one was available. But to answer the question of using a 16" or 20", I'd personally prefer my 20" A2 with ACOG for what I would think I would have to use it for. But then again, I'd probably have my 16" slung across my back as my secondary weapon. ArmaLiter

If I had to equip and use one of my AR's for real, I would use an 18" barrel with a 1:7 twist so I could shoot the newer 70+ grn bullets with accuracy.. (By 1963 ArmaLite was getting 3150fps+ out of an 18" barrel, 1:12 twist with a 55grn bullet on their AR-18.)

Oh, TEOTWAWKI. That is different than SHTF. SHTF is the LA riots or Hurrican Andrew. Order has broken down but will still in all likelyhood be restored in a indeterminant but likely short period of time. After which you are going to have to justify your actions to the law. Whatever you use is going to have to stay within the law. TEOTWAWKI means that nothing you knew before applys now. Civil War, Nuclear holocaust, Black Death, astroid impact, invasion by a foreign power, that sort of thing. Goverment is gone, not just temporairaly lost control and its clear that it will be at least years if ever that there will be a central authority again and not likely that it will be what it was before even if it did. No likelyhood of you being held accoutable for anything you did to survive. And then besides this, you have to consider where you live. SHTF in a city, a carbine, because you probably will need to carry it in a vheicle at some time and you will need to carry it on you while doing other things, like clearing debris, building barricades ect. SHTF in the country-actually not much different. You could get away with a 20" but no real reason why you would have to have it. TEOTWAWKI in city. Carbine. You may have to use it indoors, or in storm drains or sewers. TEOTWAWKI in country. 20" rifle. Better for hunting. You are not going to be around many buildings. For me TEOTWAWKI is to head for my aunt and uncles cabin in the high country north of Flagstaff where its cooler, there is year round water, lots of game, lots of firewood and few people. Also at 7800feet above tsunami level for a bollide impact. And there my ideal weapon would be a M16A4gery, with TA31F. My current AR15A2 20" HBAR is close enough though. We used to have scores of TEOTWAWKI threads here, especally around Y2K and the 2000 elections. They have kind of gone out of style (wonder why?) If you buy a membership you can get the full search engine and probably dig some of them up.

Glad you said it first. My flame suit is at the dry cleaners.[:)] But in fairness to the thread, my wife would have the AR and its a 20".

In an end of the world scenario, there'll be military equipment available for those who know where to get it. This civilian crap will be left at home... except for my M1A. That'll go with me with its Leupold scope. Alex
