I finally have enough rounds through it, and groups shot that I’m comfortable enough to say its done. 11.5” Wilson 1:8 SS HBAR, with 3 big ass flutes. The gas port was moved out 1” from the standard CAR position. Gas port was sized accordingly with the intent to always run a suppressor. The suppressor is the Gemtech M4-02, screw it on and leave it on.
Even with the suppressor it is very well balanced. I had intended to run a DD 9.0 rail, but when I realized the suppressor fit in my old 12.0, I went with what I already had(I’m cheap) The other neat part is the Geissele trigger. Well over 2K rounds on the trigger now and it hasn’t missed a beat or come out of adjustment. I took it out Saturday for some “professional” evaluation in the rain, and it worked great the entire time. I lost track of how mags we put through it, but it never missed a beat, regardless of the build up of blow back gunk. Suppressors a filthy. I’ve abused my hearing enough over the years that I can comfortably shoot it without hearing protection, but most opt for the plugs. It sounds to me like a 22 rifle. video I took advantage of the beautiful weather today and saw what it could do at 100, and 200yds. It does very well Next will be a comparison with the local PD, vs. their MP5SD's, at the distance of the longest hallway in the local High School. They have a whole bunch of M16s, they got for free, they just need new uppers |
Very nice, Only recommendation is to throw on a Magpul Trigger Guard, They are excellent for those cold trips to the range.
How much length does the M402 add? I know they say 4.2", but I dont know if that includes the falsh suppressor in the original length.
Nice build!
Hows that Pistol grip working out? Is it better than a Hogue? |
This build has the special secret feature of a trigger guard, which is held in place at one end by a spring loaded detent, which when depressed allows the guard to be pivoted down, allowing access to the trigger even when wearing the thickest mittens |
Measured from the bolt face, the barrel is exactly 17" OAL. The M402 is 6.25", and is only "shortened" when installed by the amount of threads it screws down onto the barrel.
The G27 grip is my personal choice, and has been my favorite for a few years. Better than Hogue, would have to be something to determine for yourself. |

Holy shit, they need to put that on the military guns too! |
Very nice. Sounds like my 10/22 firing CCI mini mags. Throw a Surefire on her and it would be the perfect home defense weapon. Short, handy, and won't deafen and blind you when shot indoors.

Now, I am completely in love. |

Don't get the 9" rail.
Looks really cool the way the suppressor is countersunk. |
Mine is better. Too bad I have to wait on paperwork.
Really, that is a great build! You guys can't imagine how much time, effort, and $$$ Steve put into making these SBRs into accurate, reliable, and easily handled workhorses. Upwards of ten barrels were sacrficed, and countless hours devoted to perfecting operation. We have been blessed with 40 degree swings in weather from day to day in the last few weeks. Not good for the sinuses, but great for testing rifles in conditions up to 60, and down to 20 degrees. Unfortunately, I have been unavalable for range sessions as of late. Steve mentioned moving the gas port forward, and increasing the size. He also brought up the flutes. What he did not express is just what kind of difference the flutes made. Typically, we at Adco, have thought of flutes as instruments used expressly to aid in cooling. Since most fluting is both narrow, and shallow, little weight is saved. However, these barrels have 3 deep, wide flutes that do wonders in cooling, and help in lightening SBRs, or carbines wearing suppressors or krink-style brakes. The three flutes are indexed so that one rides above the 6 0'clock rail, while the other two lay just under the vent holes on either side of the 12 o'clock rail. Pretty cool stuff. Steve isn't good at self promotion, or conversation, for that matter. But the man can buld one hell of a gun. We are fortunate that he has such an imagination, short attention span, and commitment to the shooting community. OK, I gotta go call my shrink, too may positive comments... [email protected] |

That is a fine looking weapon. So that's your personal one Steve??
Hey, I wanted to add, I bought the Match Carbine upper and I can't explain it but that thing is as smooth as heck. All these guys were talking about how a midlength is so much smoother and all this, but I'll be danged if that carbine aint the smoothest out of the 3 ar's in the family. 1 Being a 20incher and the other being a midlength recce that steve built. I'm telling you, this carbine is smoother. Why, I don't know. Maybe Steve did something magic to it. It might be that I'm prejudiced too though. Also, I did just a little bit of accuracy testing and it's fairing pretty well too. I got 350 rounds through it. I'm really glad I went with the carbine!!!!!! |
Haha, yes but another super secret feature is some cord/tape under a mags plate for ease, but I do see a magpul on there |

She's a beauty BigBore!
Inspires me to set one up 'bout the same. Love the shorties |
Pretty sweet blaster!
I'd love to have that problem! |

Steve,
Very very nice. It's funny but I have a similar build going on in 9mm right now. It will have a basically "permanent" SWR Trident inset in a Troy FF tube. OBTW, thanks for the excellent service on the parts you recently sent me to support this similar build! Bomber |
Looks like a draw string from his jacket. |
It was a joke..... Evidently I should have said support hand Bomber |

I was the guy with the camera for that pic. The fellow shooting doesnt like VGs, and I'm not about to argue with him |
I have to agree with this as well. The hogue is a huge improvement over the standard pistol grip, but the G27 (in my opinion) is better than the Hogue. I've only been using the G27 for a maybe 7 or 8 months now but I've since removed all of my hogue grips and now exclusively use the G27. |
Bigbore,
Did you weld up the existing gas port hole in the barrel? Or did you start with a blank? Thanks 96Ag |
Nice! I've got to stop looking at all of these SBRs, I'm starting to get the urge for one.
[tree-hugger on] I can't believe someone would want to build something like that!!! What would you ever need such a rifle for??? People like you are crazy and should be locked up!!! [/tree-hugger off]
Very nice build!!! I can't wait on my Form 4 to come back (went pending Jan 4)..... You make criminals envious!!!! |
Nice rifle!
Where in Ohio are you shooting? I am NE ohio near akron/ canton area and looking for a nice range to shoot. Thanks |
Very cool. I like the Glock sticker on the stock. Thanks for posting the vids.
Too damn nice, Steve.
Sounds like a .22lr. A few questions: How loud is the sonic crack? Is it comfortable to fire indoors w/out hearing protection? What is the Db reduction rate for the M4-02? |
Ashland Lage Gun Club
The sonic crack is like a hand clap I guess? I dont think it would be comfortable indoors without hearing protection. Most people, I doubt would want too many rounds through without hearing protection outside. Add the same suppressor to a 16" barrel and its much quiter. I'm not sure what the Db reduction rate is, Gemtech doesnt publish those numbers. You'll have to drop me a line and I can meet you at the guys house who transferred the Kimber for you, and you can hear for yourself |
Db reduction should be between 30 and 32 Db, depending on who you listen to. The baffle stack is virtually the same as the longer, removeable GemTech offerings. This is what I've read on the net, anyway.
Thats what I've read and what I was told. For comparison, heres the 02 between a HALO and 96D |
Not bad at all. I was expecting the sonic crack to be worse. I know the 5.56 is not the easiest round to suppress, but the .22Lr like report from an 11.5" is VERY impressive, to say the least. I might have to take You up on that offer, now that MI is now a Class III friendly state and My financial prioritys have taken a sudden, and abrupt change |

Quoted:
www.adcofirearms.com/images/mud_carbine.jpg Holy shit Batman! I want that!! Very nice...and unfortunately from what I hear, fairly illegal where I live. |
rsilvers tested the unit at 138.8 db with a 14.5" barrel for a sound reduction of 26.1 db total with Q3131A.
The M4-02 should be just over 140 db on an 11.5" barrel and is not hearing safe so you should not shoot it or extended periods without hearing protection. Out of the 27 suppressors they tested it ranked 5th worst for reduction and 5th worst for first round pop. Does not exactly jive with 30 or 32 db quoted earlier. M4-02 is a good can because it is cheap and light, not because it suppresses well. Go to silencertests.com and you can find suppressors for that price and weight that suppress better but they are at least 1.2oz heavier and $75 more expensive. |
I don't know how much stock I put in those numbers, but OK, thanks. |
Took it through the paces today at 107yds and 250yds.
It was really windy, but once we figured out where to hold over, it was no problem hitting the plate at 250yds. We would empty 20rd mags as fast as we could aim and pull the trigger. The barrel was getting hot, but we kept getting hits. Chrony info: XM193 - 2858fps M855 - 2735fps 68gr BH - 2454fps 75gr TAP - 2346fps 75gr TAP - with the suppressor removed - 2313fps |
Steve, those numbers look a little on the low side. I''ve seen almost 2500 fps out of Colt barrels using TAP ammo.
Nice weapon. |
Different barrels, different chambers, different temps, different elevations, different lot #, different chronographs, will all give different numbers. The last time I chronyd an 11.5" with this gas system(different barrel), the temp was in the teens, and 75gr TAP from the same lot ran at 2247, while the M855 ran 2654. Today, the temps were in the 50s. My chronograph is an Ohler 35P. Sometimes reality can be let down I guess. |
