Just got this Upper and inspection card is dated 1/10/07 and it appears there is rust starting. Maybe I am seeing things, or it is some sort of compound (glue?) they add? Pic below of the general area, but the pic does not really show it.

Looks more like residue from the phosphating process, clean it with CLP and see how it turns out.

Hit it with CLP, or equivalent, and a toothbrush for a few minutes, wipe clean, and see how it looks then.

It is probably just dust.

It should disappear with a little CLP.

CLP will most likely get rid of it.  I say residue.

This is what happens when the FSB and barrel are parkerized as an assembly.

I was thinking the same thing...

What I was thinking. And as the others have mentioned……CLP and a tooth brush.

Take apart a full barrel assembly that's been parked like this and you'll find small amounts of surface rust on all the areas left in the white.

I pulled apart an Eagle AR-10 barrel and found rust like this. I used some PB Blaster and a nylon brush to get rid of rust on mine.  I'm sure there's better stuff but that's what I had lying around.  After that, I cleaned it off with some lacquer thinner then rubbed some CLP over the all the surfaces.

LMT doesn't park under the FSB? Does Sabre defense?

Thx.

Well I guess taking it apart and oiling it is no big deal since everything from the front of the handguards forward looks like it was already handled quite a bit, or in someone's butt.

I have not seen a Sabre barrel in quite some time and don't remember if they were parked under there or not.
In general, the only ones that DO park under the FSB are Colt, CMMG and Bravo Co..
There could be others that I missed, but all the other MAJOR makers (Armalite, Bushmaster, LMT, Olympic, Stag etc...) do NOT park under the FSB.

I just put a Sabre 20" 1/7 .gov contour barrel on one of my weapons this week, it was parked under the FSB.

That looks pretty rough all the way around. Kinda like someone stood back and hit it with a can of Rustoleum.

WTF?

Maybe little off topic but I cannot understand why LMT doesn´t use taper pins?

It´s not so time taking procedure to machine slots for taper pins and it sure is per mil spec..

Yeah, I have to agree, that the LMT upper I am looking at here looks nothing like the ones that I see on the for sale threads.  Could that just be that this one needs wiped down with CLP or are those marks deeper than that and do not disappear with a wipedown?

It's a quality thing

Denny

You beat me to it Denny.

And to the OP, that upper looks rough. If you are not happy send it back.

i doubt that they parkd the barrel/fsb with the handguard cap against the fsb.  pop the handguards off, and get some oil on your weapon.  its probably been sitting around for a while.  if it bothers you that much, get a higher quality barrel next time.

Is that Jeff Bridges in the Bowling alley in the Big Lebowski in your avatar?

If so, I was standing about 20ft away when they did that shot.
Watch the DVD extras and you will see me running a radio controlled camera car chasing bowling balls for that movie...

That is indeed The Dude.

I'll have to look for you on there.
