Was at megasports in plainfield illinois.  Their staff said that they just got in an SR556.  They would not let me handle it, or even see it, claiming that  it was already sold.

The topic came up again with the handgun staff and they confirmed. So I guess its true - ruger must be shipping.

It is shipping guys on this forum have them.  I have not seen any credible info telling how much is done in house.

They make the barrel and lower parts, as well as the piston components.

Receivers and forend are outsourced.
