I'm  thinking of buying a Rock river AR and was wondering what the opinion is around here on their rifles. I also looked at some S&W M&P's and debated on the piston driven over gas but the cheapest was around $999 so going for a Gas operated AR15.

I've had a lot of ARs over the years but the two I've always found to be the best are the Colts and Rock Rivers.
For whatever reason, they are always accurate and always function with no malfunctions or part breakage no matter how hard I use them.

Im just here to say you can purchase RRA with confidence.

Make sure you look at the S&W first.  Their prices are coming down and they have top quality.  Have fun shopping.

I have a few RRA rifles and they all shoot great. Very accurate.

Just the opinion of a happy customer.

Do your homework on what you want and cost compared to other makers.

If RRA is what you want then you should hit up Pete at Legal Transfers on this site.  He may be able to get you a better deal than you can find local.

I have a RRA mid length and it's a solid shooter.  The gas key staking wasn't the best, but I swapped it out for a mil spec BCG anyway.  IMO do NOT get a HBAR rifle.  Those suckers can get heavy if you plan on drills or carrying it.

For the money, I believe the Smith & Wesson M&P15 is a better weapon than the RRA.  That being said, there are still better choices to be made these days with higher quality manufacturers being priced the same as or lower than what you can find in the low to mid level ARs.  In particular, a Colt SP 6920 can be had for less than $1000.  There are other options from other manufacturers that are higher quality than the low to mid level ARs that are priced from a little below $600 up to $1000 as well.

Do yourself a favor and research ARs first, decide what you want to do with it, research some more then start checking prices.  In the end you will be glad you put forth the effort.  You can start by reading this thread.

Between here and TOS you should be able to find more than enough information to make an informed decision and wise purchase.

What do you want it for. Plinking, goofing off, it'll be ok.   Hard use classes? Much better choices abound. DD, BCM, LMT, Colt and a couple of others.

Get one, don't worry about the people who will tell you there are better ways to spend your money. Those people will come along and tell you that no matter what brand you ask about.
Be sure to give us a range report when you get it!!!

RRA is a good rifle I have an entry tac that I have abused quite abit.

I have only had one failure and that was a seperated case on my reloads.

The rifles do well, accuracy is good. I can only fault RRA on not offering a light wieght barrel option in the product line.

Basically, they are reliable and considered very accurate. Some members here believe that RRA are not combat worthy because of the commercial receiver extension, semi auto bolt carrier, 4140 barrel steel, 1:9 twist rate, optional chrome lining, lack of parkerizing under the front sight/gas block and not individually testing of bolts and barrels. Some also have problems with the quality of thier furniture.

Personally, I have used RRA parts and an upper and had no problems as of yet. I think the main problem is that along with (the old) Bushmaster, RRA, Stag and other commercial manufacturers still price thier products as high or higher than the newer TDP clone companies like BCM, DD, Spikes, etc. (Colt has come down in price in the last few years) Which I do see the point if you can build a BCM for the same price as a RRA in the same configuration it is a no brainer. But alot of the "milspec" stuff is not essential for a reliable AR-15. Maintenance and education will keep a weapon running more than some magic twist rate or rubber o-ring insert.

I ordered an RRA about a month ago. Looking forward to getting it, whenever that may be! Already have some magpul furniture, Eotech 516, 6 Pmags, and ammo. Just need the gun!

They get good reviews from everyone that has one, and are a pretty good value for $950 shipped with sights, two clips, and a case. I might have built one like everyone says with a PSA upper and maybe a RRA lower, but its my first AR and I can always get a new upper for it down the road.

RRA is GTG, but is not where I would spend my money.  There are better rifles available for less money.  Look at Spikes, PSA and BCM - better quality, less money.  DD and Colt will probably be right around the same price as RRA, but are better quality.  I doubt you'll ever have a problem with an RRA, and it should be very accurate, but at least consider some higher quality options, which can be had for less money.

I have a close friend that's had a RRA for 7-8 years and loves it. He said that it's never malfunctioned and he shoots 2-300 rounds/weekly through it. About the only time it's cleaned and oiled is when I do it for him. When he's not out shooting it the rifle rides around, loose and without a case, in his god-awful nasty P/U. That tells me they're pretty durable. I strongly prefer my Colt 6920, but that's only natural because that's what I own and not a RRA.

If I can piggyback to the OP a little ...

A lot of people are saying there's better for the money. Where? I see the Car A4 for $750 on EE.  For someone that just wants something basic, where are better rifles for cheaper?  Even S&W I'm seeing for that price, DD and Stag are in the 800+ range.

Sources for those assertions?

Palmetto State Armory or Spike's Tactical off the top of my head.  More if you feel like searching.
