1/2 x 28 seem to be difficult to get. I noticed that 1/2x 20 is very common and can be had at the local HD. Would getting a die and tap and rethreading the original 1/2x 28 to 1/2 x 20 be a good idea??

You'd then have to re-thread everything you put on the barrel. I'd just get the correct tap n die or pay someone to do it for you. Less trouble in the long run.

You would regret that. You can get 1/2-28 taps and dies from brownells.

I say sent it out and pay the money because if you mess up, it will cost you more in the long run. The correct way to do it is to turn it between centers on a lathe and thread it there. But if you insist on using a die, make sure to use a guide; nothing looks worst than a crooked flash hider. And make sure to check the clearance with whatever FH you'll be using as the die will not cut concentric to the bore.

I agree...sent it out unless your good with a lathe.

I just got a 1/2-28 die from MSC. Arrived 18 hours after I ordered it.

Brownells is out of 1/2x28 dies
email recived from Brownells

"Dear Sir,

We certainly do appreciate your interest in Brownells.
We are expecting more dies on October 10th. At this time we do not have
A2 flash hiders; we do plan to start carrying them in the near future in
light of the AWB sunset.

Considering all of the threaded muzzle devices are 1/2"-28 tpi (threads per inch), it seems that it would not be wise to thread any but 1/2"-28, too.

Let me put it this way, you can't screw a flash suppressor onto the barrel if you used 1/2"-20, I don't care how easily available it is.

Chasing them of course would be easier

Thanks for the link Mickey! I just ordered a die for my .308 and one for my wife's AR15. Flash hiders arrived today and I have had no luck whatsoever finding the required tools for less than $85 anywhere...I got out of it using KBC for a flat $25! Happy camper here!

Wouldnt it depend on what you wanted to put on the threads like FH or suppressor?

45acp rifle barrel would probably be best to use 5/8-24.
