How often should the three gas rings be replaced on
the AR15 bolt? Is there a way to test the rings for wear? Also is the single McFarland ring a
better design, if so why? Lastly, are there any tricks to removing and repalcing the rings?

Replace your rings only when they need to be.

Here is the test.

Take your bolt and carrier apart. Take just the bolt and place it back in the carrier. Hold the carrier so that the bolt is facing down. If the bolt slides out of the carrier under its own weight, it is time to replace the rings. If the bolt stays put, they are fine.
