Part 3 of my latest batch of .223/5.56 ammo tested.
Here are 27 more different types of 2.23/5.56 ammo.

If you missed my original test of 60 different types of .223 / 5.56 ammo go here:
.223 / 5.56 Ammo Test Part 1

My second test of 16 different types of .223/5.56 ammo go here:
.223 / 5.56 Ammo Test Part 2

The targets I used are the Hoppes S-12 50-Yard Small Bore Rifle targets that come 5 to a page.
Each target measures 4 inches across. I placed 1" orange dot stickers in the middle of the targets for easier target centering while aiming.

All shots were fired from 100 yards. Five shot groups were fired from each bullet type and repeated 4 times for consistency checking. The groups are displayed from smallest to largest and not in order of firing.
Wind was less than 10mph each day of shooting.

The rifle used is as follows:

Rock River Arms Upper
24 inch stainless Bull barrel in .223 Wylde chamber with 1:8 twist
Spike’s Tactical Lower
Rock River Arms 2-stage trigger.
Vortex 6-24X50mm scope

I apologize as I don't have a chronograph so the velocities listed are stated and not actual.

Any chance you can get some IMI M855 and M193 for some tests? I'd like to see how it stacks up in your tests vs some of the others you've already tested.

Keep up the good work!

Great work.  I look forward to more tests in the future.

Have you thought about putting all of the ammunition you have tested in a chart form?

How does a guy with over 100 types of ammo not have  a chrono?

Thanks for the tests.

Thanks for the testing-quick question, I notice a lot of the groups open up from left to right, is the barrel hot or is it resting between groups?
I am assuming you are shooting left to right-thanks!

Thanks Cody!

Ever since your first test, I've been using the Fiocchi 77 gr. Match King with excellent results at 200 yards, on several different platforms.

It also works perfectly on Zombies at 400.    Contagion 2012

I'll definitely give the remanufactured UltraMax 52 gr. HP a try.

Thanks again.

Thanks for the comparision test.
I had some Ultramax, and other than shooting dirty as all get out it shot good in my gun also.
However I did not do a grouping on it.

As always, excellent job.

You might have said in another thread, but how often is the bore cleaned on your rifle?

I clean it before every session. I shoot about 25 rounds through it prior to testing.
in a session I'll test about 8-12 different types of ammo. I've shot 1/2 groups in both a first test and a 12th test so accuracy is still present throughout the testing.

+1 and my thanks also for your time and trouble. Very informative. I was surprised at how well the lighter loads shot in the 1:8. This provides visual verification that you need to find what your rifle likes, as well as the fact that different loads can print to different POI.

Thank you; this is a very valuable service.  Not everybody has easy access to a good bench setup or even a range.  Your other test confirmed what I suspected about Federal TRU 64 gr softpoint (at least out of my rifle), but without other evidence I always wonder if it's just me.  I'm going to burn through the rest of my TRU and find another deer round.

Cody,

I felt it was easier for people to see and compare how accurate each brand was knowing the best groups were first and the worst last.

Nice range report.

Good job now everyone knows how the ammo shoots in YOUR RIFLE!   Remember folks it shoots that way in his rifle maybe totally different in yours. Where  his shot crappy, yours might shoot bug holes with that same ammo.  Lot to lot variances will also effect performance. ETC.  Bottom line every rifle is different.

By the way, I have 4 AR15s in different barrel lengths, twists and some are stainless and some are chrome lined. I have tested a lot of ammo through all of them and good match ammo that was accurate here is accurate in the other 3 as well. Ammo that performed poorly here also performed poorly in the others. I know that isn't the case in every rifle out there but I can say the testing results stayed pretty uniform across the board in my 4 rifles.
What I have found, almost as a rule of thumb, is that ballistic tip and HP rounds tend to be more accurate than FMJ.

You are quite correct, Gacker. However, Cody's tests may well serve as a guide in the quest for the "perfect" load! I still haven't found it!

Excellent range report Cody....I have a RRA upper with a 20" stainless barrel in 1:8 Wylde chamber threaded in .223 with a RRA 2-stage trigger also that is a very nice and accurate shooter......I'm going to have to go back and review parts 1 & 2 and decide about getting me some of your test ammo!
