I am looking at changing over to rail system vs standard hand gards. I think a quad would be best. Do I just take of my standard hand guards, measure, then get the same length ?

More or less, just don't get hung up on minor differences in the exact length. Generally you're looking at about 7" on a carbine gas model, about 9" on a mid-length gas and about 12" on a rifle-length gas. And I assume you're talking about direct replacements (usually referred to as "drop-in" handguards), where you can just remove the old two-piece plastic ones and replace with a two-piece quad rail. If you're thinking about switching over to a free-float handguard then there's a little more to it.
