Radway Green 7.62x51 question

At my local gun store today, I spotted a wooden crate over in the corner. It has been there for a few years with boxes stacked up on top of it. It was a sealed wooden crate of 1,000 rounds of Radway Green 7.62x51 L2A2 Ball ammo. The owner said that he would give me the whole thing for $225. I opened the crate and checked out a box. It is 1984 headstamped with RG and the NATO cross. Is this a good deal? I googled it, but I could not find much info on the ammo. I am a noob to the 308 surplus thing. I just don't want to get burned.

To me thats a damn good deal and I dont have a M14 anymore to shoot it. I will take it and buy me a M1A if you do not get it.

I am only 10 hours away by slow car.

I guess that I will be at his door tomorrow morning. I reckon that I will get the other 200 rounds off the shelf too if they are the same price. Now I just have to decide if I will leave the crate unopened, or if I will put the boxes in sealed ammo cans. Decisions ...decisions. Thanks for the replies.

This is excellent military surplus ammunition and I would buy more in a heartbeat. Below is a five shot group I shot with my StG58. Four rounds into 0.51 inch and the fifth shot being a flyer. This is typical with Radway Green through this rifle. I get similar results with my H&K SR9T.

What is this ammo worth now? I am looking at a FAL or M1A, but I have yet to purchase one. I do not want an ammo steal to elude me, but I don't want to blow the money on ammo now when I could buy the same ammo for the same price in a few months. I am trying to get alot of my major firearms purchases done before the next congress takes session.

There is very little RG .308 out there, and not all that much surplus either except for SA. If you don't know if you are going to get it, IM me the dealer.

Dude, buy it, someone who knows what it is will snap it up. I would buy it for that price without hesitation myself.

Your not going to find that ammo around anymore. If you dont get it someone else will and you will hate yourself later. On the other hand, if you dont want it, send it to me and I will use...I mean dispose of it for you. Some of the best milsurp 7.62 out there. Sadly I'm down to the last 140 rnds of the same stuff I bought years ago.

On EE I would bet you could get $275-$300 for sealed case. More than I would pay but there are some guys out there that don't reload.

For $225 I would snatch it up local!

buy it now, it's one of the best 7.62mm surplus rounds made.

and it's in short supply as the brits aren't surplusing it anymore right now

(1. they use the 5.56 primarily now and 2. they're in a shooting war alongside us so not much surplus as they're rotating their stock w/o surplus dealers help. That's a presumption on my part, I didn't get a memo from Mr. Blair)

hirtenberger (my M1a hated this but everyone else likes it)

and all in short supply, right now only the South African is around in quantity which is diminishing fast.

I am now the proud owner of 1,160 rounds of Radway Green 7.62x51. Thanks for all the info and replies. Now I just need to get that FAL or M1A to shoot the ammo out of.

Bought the exact same stuff a few years ago-- 3 cans of 400 rds each for $40 a can!!
