Ok, where's my fee for getting Smith all set up on the .458 Vortex?  I'm actually interested to see one of the RRA Smith Vortexes - the ones for the GB .458s were built specifically for the barrel Marty used in the buy.  From the picture shown above they are slightly different...

I too am curious to see the new version, as well as the RRA gas block ... as to your fee, I am sure we can find something for you ... ammo sound OK? or another FH (YHM 5C2 Phantom)?

I wonder if they have the ejection port door cover operational, or if they just left it off like AA?

While Im sure the RRA 458's will be great, I know Im glad I had the big MTW do mine....the thing is flawless, no jams, no FTF's only a few scope eyes...but then again thats not his fault....


I would be interested to do a side by side shoot out of the RRA 458 and my own, at 100 yards ive had one group with 300 grain corbons which measured .73 and I have had several groups all holes touching, granted there big holes....
Im guessing the twist isnt 1 in 14 in the RRA barrels or am I incorrect?

I have to agree with Cold.  Mine is fine tuned and is running great.  I would be up for a shoot out any day with one.  I have Some 300gr Barnes X's that at 50 yards will stack.  At 100yards are touching - like the man said, big holes!!!.

RRA is using the 14 twist at our recommendation due to LE interest in the 600 gr subsonic loads

458 is the way to go. The 308 is just another bushmaster

Will the 1 in 14 twist from RRA still get the accuracy results the Cold and Doc Roc are getting with 300 grain ammo?
I looking into the 458 for strictly hunting and at this point in time have no interest in using the 500-600 grain ammo.  
The price is right at 660, it even beats Castle Arms uppers, but the the 1:14 twist may turn those away who wish to hunt with 300 grain ammo.
I'm just going on what I read about in the  458 FAQ's forum.

If you reload you might find that the 405 remington soft point does better than the 300 hollow point.

I was interested in the RRA until I read about the 1 in 14. Now it's a no-go. I'll be looking elsewhere for a slower twist for the 300's.

I can't wait for someone ( Redding/Hornady) to release reasonably priced DIES!I'll be in SOCOM heaven.

DocRock and the other uppers you read about all came with the 1 in 14 twist, so RRA went with that twist on my recommendation.  It is NOT inappropriate to use for these rifles and is turning in great groups ... so do not be turned away from these uppers.  We initially started with 1 in 18 but that was insufficient for the 600s.  The last 120+ uppers have all been done in 1 in 14 and as I said are turning in great groups with the 300s.  Note that RRA has put a 1.5" at 100 gaurantee in the catalog.  That is plenty of accuracy to take any game at 100 yards.

what does it cost to feed this pig?

It doesnt look like a 4 rail ff tube is going to fit over that gas block.  What are the options for a low profile gas block?

Are they going to be offering a stripped upper?  I'd like to use their upper but with a different barrel.

It's expensive from what I've seen of prices on the Corbon website roughly 45 bucks/box of 20.  This is actually reasonable if you compare it to 45-70 loads loaded by Garrett and Buffalo Bore.  
I initially wanted the 45-70 Marlin 1895, but hey the .458 Socom and the platform it's fired in is just sweet.  I just keep saving my pennies until I can get and upper and ammo.  After that I'll look to reloading equipment.

You might check with Lee for dies.  They had some and they were cheap (back when I was broke) and they still get the job done just fine.  The Corbon stuff is pricey compared to personal reloads, but again - you will probably shoot this less than your standard .223.

1/14.....well, I shoot well under 1.5" at 100 yards with mine and very pleased.  Have not had a bad load yet.  The BarnesX 300gr are a great choice for my weapon.  I have spent a lot of time getting it how I want it and it works great.

I saw the RRA at Shot and I do have to say - it is a nice piece of metal.  Balances well and is all in all a nice starting point.  Like you said Marty - it has a functioning dust cover!!!.

Gas blocks.  Plenty on the market.  CMMG.  Yankee Hill.  Brownells and Midway both carry several that work.

Price and ammo will hopefully soon fall to economics.  Supply and demand.  If enough people buy uppers, then more ammo must be produced and then competition comes into play - thus we hope cheaper ammo.  Well, at least I hope cheaper ammo.

I can not bitch about ammo though.  I have fallen in love with my 500 Phantom and that is an expensive love at the moment!  My wife is jealous.
