Hey Ya'll,

I was kinda thinking that we should have a thread dedicated to AR's (or any firearm for that matter) that you have refinished. Duracoat, NMR whatever you got!

Below are my latest efforts, please post yours, mebbie we can get this tacked if it picks up

- Gazukull

OD NMR

TAN NMR

Stickman,
I am gunna probably snap those pics for you this weekend. Also does anyone have experience using Brownells Moly seems like it is NMR under a different name, and with dealer discount it is DIRT cheap!

Don't bother with that stuff, it is nasty. BTW, nice rifle and pics.

So, I take it from the pics you just shot the rifle assembled and through it in the oven?

Yepper, as per the tutorial at pre-ban, I just heated / sprayed the parts, than cooked em. Then I assem'd them after that.

I use a $4 dollar airbrush and a 55 dollar compressor from Harbor Freight (yah... I know... Chicom junk...).

So you did shoot the parts seperately? Looks good either way, just curious.

Here are a few contributions. Not an AR, but it gets the job done.
This was my first attemp using Norrells OD and Flat Black on mag ext.

And after.......................

Done with a 29.00 airbrush and lots of GREAT info and tips from these boards!!!!. The hardest part was waiting for the little woman to leave for long enough to use the oven!!!!!!

Show-Off...dude I'd want my thread "sticky'd" if my guns looked that god too
Nice job they look great.

The sticky's a good idea but could you all agree to post the finish type, and color/combinations of...for purposes of referrence?

Thanks.

Finally got off my lazy ass and put this together, after turning the barrel down and re-Norrell's-ing everything.

Yes, friends, that is a 16" Bushmaster 1/7 Light Under the Handguards barrel.

The receivers looks pretty glossy because they're pretty oiled up. I lubed them well during the assembly process to help protect the finish. The bipod is a photo-op install only.

I used Duracoat on the upper receiver and the moderator.

mongo001,

Is that NMR? If so, what color? I found the tan alot harder to use than the OD. The OD goes on like a dream, whereas with the tan I had to thin the crap outta it with MEK.

Thanks!

I had a hell of a time putting this on, especially on the MEGA lower. I'm thinking the teflon on the MEGA lower had something to do with it, as all the other parts took the NMR pretty well. The plastic parts were a one time deal and hold the NMR much better than the lower did. The lower has three thin coats on it.

I'll try for some better, nonglossy pics later this week.

Goofy if you have the one w/ the fat wooden forend, but I think those are goofy to start out. If you have the lower profile plastic version, my vote is "damn cool".

I like the contrast...

When you bake the Duracoat on a complete upper, can all the parts stay on [except for the handguards]?

Link Posted: 5/4/2005 6:12:30 PM EDT
rag,

From what I understand you dont bake duracoat, it just takes a ton longer to cure.

Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Moly resin is baked on, you could do it all at one time including the handguards, but then you would not get the anti rust properties on the barrel of your ar. Which in my humble opinion, needs it most.

Hope that helps.

Oh so true, I had to take a half day off of work to bake mine. I did it in the morning in case I needed all day, and also to allow time for the house to ventilate the rest of the afternoon. But as it turned out, the KG-gunkote stuff had no odor while baking. Only while spraying and cleaning (that MEK is toxic stuff onces it's sprayed out in the open).

To D-V-D-A: That is a Speedfeed forend that was included w/ the pistol grip stock.

To MONGO: I am going to refinish my AR soon (RRA Entry Tactical w/ VLTOR).
How did your plastics hold up to baking? Do you bake to the recommended 300/ 1hr or something else?

Thanks

Just to be safe, I'd go with 200F for about 2 hrs. I don't think the plastic is anywhere near close to the melting point there.
Link Posted: 5/4/2005 6:53:57 PM EDT
Is this how yours were baked, if so did you check the finish to make sure it had cured fully?
Thanks
Link Posted: 5/4/2005 6:56:51 PM EDT
Cure plastics in the oven at 250 for 90 minutes. Verify that it is properly cured by using acetone or similar solvent.

The biggest thing aside from degreasing is making sure that your oven is the correct temperature. There have been a lot of people who have emailed me, only to find out that their oven settings are way off when they actually use a thermometer......

It won't cure if your oven settings are off.

It's on there. It is holding up much better than the coating on the lower receiver, that's for sure.

Thanks, that makes me feel better about the plastics refinish. 200 it is.
You say its a MEGA lower. Their finish is different that others isnt it? Possible Teflon?
Was thinking about a MEGA for my next one.

Didnt see Stickman (refinish GOD) post. 250 and everything came out of the over without warpage?
Link Posted: 5/4/2005 7:17:34 PM EDT
I can't say for certain, but IMO, the MEGA lower receivers are clear hard anodized with some type of teflon coating over them. My experience with the relatively large chip coming off in one accidental impact incident makes me pretty sure about that. Just to be a hard headed moron, I intentionally recreated the same impact accident on a Bushmaster lower, not once but twice, just to prove my stupidity, BUT, the Bushmaster anodizing didn't chip, it just dented, as I expected. This is just my opinion and feeling, but MEGA lower receivers are off my list of parts to use. Everyone raves about their finish, but alot of machining marks can be covered up with whatever coating they use. As always, YMMV.
