I have a Colt Sporter in 7.62x39. This is an older pre-ban gun and I am wondering if I should leave it be or go ahead and modify it. The gun came with a M-4 type collapsable stock on it but the only pics I have seen of 7.62 x 39 sporters always have guns with an A2 style stock on them. It does have 2 original Colt mags with it. There is no original box or documentation with the gun. I have seen them sell for quite a bit new in box, but this gun has been fired and appears to have an aftermarket stock on it, so I am thinking it is not much of a collectors piece. The only mods I really want to do are to add an ambi safety and mag release and get a new stock as the one on it is really not that great. The gun will mostly be used in fun matches and 3-gun limited class (no optics or electronic sights) so the A2 upper is OK. Figured I would ask before I did something I would regret.

It's your gun and not NIB so I would tell you to do as you wish. The COLT roll marks are still going to be there anyways! My .02. M4QUADRAIL

Are you happy with the gun and especially the caliber?
A correct A2 stock and buffer tube can't be too hard to find or too expensive; personally, I don't have a problem with returning a relatively modern gun to OEM specifications.  Is an A2 in .30 ComBloc especially rare or desirable?
Do the math and consider your own wishes; if you do decide to sell it and really want to be on the side of the angels, explain the gun's provenance, or really bite the bullet and get the 'Colt' parts from SAW.....
