I've read that the 1:7 twist is somehow related to shorter barrel life vs. the 1:12 A1.

Questions (assume no other variables, ie., same ammo, same lining, same ROF, etc.):  
1.  Is this true?  
2.  If so, can this loss be quantified?  
3.  Thoughts on why this is so?
