I recently got this Colt SP-1 Carbine.  Got a pretty good deal on it.  The finsh on the lower receiver is much lighter than the rest of the rifle and lighter than the other 4 SP-'s I have.  It's a much lighter grey.  It looks original, all marking look correct, stake marks and paint blobs are still present on the butt stock lock ring, residual paint blob on bolt release and the pivot screw doesn't look like it was ever been messed with.  Inside of the receiver and mag well is also lighter color.

Could this have come from Colt like this?  Seller said he bought it 20-25 years ago in this condition.

Even included a nice Colt 3x20 scope.

I personally have never seen such a contrast, that is a huge difference in colors.

it may just be starved for hydrocarbons. you might try immersing / soaking it in clp for a period of time.
i think it  was M1-Sniper that used this method. worst case, you get a lubed lower.

I think you got a mixmaster.

25 years would make it 1985  (edited because I can't do math )

That lower looks OLDER -

Wouldn't it be a 1978?

Possible but the data base says the serial number was made in 1983.

The 1 is lightly struck, so it's 83ish production.

Possible but the data base says the serial number 187407 was made in 1983.

That's what I meant -  If the owner said he bought it new 25 yrs ago (1985 ) why would the lower
be dated as mfg. in 1983 ?

(edited for math error )

Am I missing something? 1988 was not 25 years ago.

Looks like a cool LW Colt carbine to me and with scope.  Lower is 1983 at least.  Shoot the crap out of it and have some fun.  Does look like two different pieces though.  What's the barrel twist? Is that stock staking a factory job, pic looks a little funny on my pic?

Read agin never said he bought it new, I said he bought it 20-25 years ago in this condition.  Lower is not actually dated.  The SP-1 Data base shows the serial number range as being produced in 1983.  Here is a link to the data base for clarification CLICK HERE

Barrel twist is 1 in 12 and is marked CMP Chrome Bore.  The staking looks like the factory staking on my other rifle.  Maybe the paint blob maikes it look funny in the pic?  Who knows, It was well worth the price I paid reguardless what it is.

OK I fixed the date.

So if he DIDN't buy it NIB , it could have had an upper swap

I have no problem with the two-tone finish.  In fact, I'm considering that same effect for my next 1911 build!

But then, I like SP1 carbines in general...really need to get me one of those!
