I was doing the tour of the local fun shops with one of my buddies the other day when we wandered into a gunshop/collectors/surplus store. They had 1200 rnds of 5.56 thats head stamped 'FNM 83-2'. The primers are sealed and there's a slight crimp on the necks. It's packed in 400 rnd battle packs, marked 'FNM 55grn 5.56-400rnds'.
Anyone have an idea what it is, where it was made?

They also have 800 rnds of winchester 308 packed on bandolers I'm going back for. Was mil 308 still corrosive in '59?

Its Portugese M193.  Available in the 80's, then dried up at some point.  I have most of two battlepacks left, but have never chrongraphed it.  Seems like nice stuff.

I use to buy this Portuguese ammo at Federal Ordnance in Azusa.  It really was my favorite M193. I shot up the last of it in 2005.  It is full power, accurate, has flash retardant, is reliable, and shoots great.  Wish I could pick up 4-5 of the battle packs.  I use to pay $64 per 400 round battle pack.

It does have a mild steel (not copper) jacket.

Where in TX might this store be?

Not that I'd drive right over and buy all three battlepacks or anything...

Honest!

Actually its in NC, and I bought all three. I had to...at $50 bucks a pop.

Thanks all for the info-I've had good luck with port 308, so I'm happy.
