Hey guys,

I haven't used any ammo except Q3131a (so far) in my AR15 and I was a bit curious as to how other brands compare. In light of "someone" running out of Q3131a during a local sale there are two other alternatives I am considering. The first is Winchester 55 grain 223(white box) and the second is Remington UMC 223 55gr.

Would some of the more experienced members please LMK what the specs and differences are between the three . In regards to comparing the ammo, I am using two Colt 1/7 20" barrels. One of them is a HBAR and the other is a government profile.

Thanks for your help and information!!

If you are looking for Mil-spec 5.56 performance you will be disappointed in these loads as they are only loaded to the SAAMI .223 Specs. But both of these brands are popular with those who don't miss the couple hundred fps (or have .223 chambers)  and from what I have experienced and read both are reliable performers.

If you want the full 5.56 you should at least try the Federal XM193.  You can't  beat the online deals pinned on this forum.

Using my 11.5 " Colt_SRB with an A2 flash hider, the muzzle flash from the XM193 (5.56) was like Lucifer himself was in front of the barrel.  I would have been blinded at night.

The Q3131A (5.56) had less of a muzzle flash.  I could of probably seen after shooting

The Q3131 (.223) had the least muzzle flash.  No problem there.  Could have recovered after the shot for a second shot.

Something to think about if you really have to do shooting in the dark.  A better flash hider would be nice if using XM193 ammo.

Thanks for the info! I kinda figured the other brands weren't up to the same specs as Q3131a but I just wanted to make sure before I bought any.

The "someone" I mentioned that ran out of Q3131a was Bass Pro. With their sale going on they wanted to substitute Remington UMC for Q3131a.  Galyans has Winchester 223(55gr) but not Q3131a. When I asked the sales guy at BP about any differences between the two I should have known before hand it was going to be a lost cause.

About the only thing the sales staff can tell ya is :yes, its ammunition, AND its in a box!!

both of those rounds you mentioned are plenty good for plinking.  I've shot umc quite a bit.  It's not as accurate as some but for me it's about middle of the road.  But they are both not up to nearly the same par for self defense.  q3131a is good for self defense but the other two would be risky or just plain silly.  The winchester's both have a white box but that's about where the likeness ends.  The q uses a milspec bullet and milspec loading or nato loading, which is much hotter (more fps).  And probably other things I'm missing.  But read the ammo-oracle as stated and you will learn more.

So basspro is out ha?  I was going to order some Q from them too. shoot.  Are you talking online or in stores?

For practice, you'd be good to go with UMC.  It's a very mild load.  It's easy on your rifle and the brass is great for reloading because it's not stretched out.

He asked a good question.

Yeah, but it was only a good question because his first choice in m193.  If he would of said he didn't know what to substitute for his 69 smk's you'd of been all over him.  Just kidding!!!!!!

FYI I went to Bass Pro on Tuesday for the Q3131A and they were out.  I got a rain check and called this morning.  They had a load in so I had them set a case aside for me.  It took me two hours to get there and the only thing left was my case.

Get a rain check & call.  $154 out the door for 1,000 rounds.

I have had good luck shooting both the other brands you said.  But if you want to stick with something that is just like Q3131a go with xm193.

The Win. Q3131A is a great deal.  I was going to run down to Bass Pro from Milwaukee after work the other day.  Good thing I called first.  At that time, they only had 1 box, not case, in stock.  The sweet female that took my call was gracious enough to put me down for a rain check.
