Simple question: is Winchester Q3131A as hot as Federal XM193? Thanks.

XM193 is $189/1K
Q3131A is $150/1K

...at my local shop.

YES.

There's not enough difference between the two to matter. Both meet M193 specs for velocity. However the Q3131A seems to have less muzzle flash than XM193 and it is also sealed at the case mouth and primer, where later lots of the Federal aren't.....if that's important to you.

When I was having short stroking problems (caused by my gun--not ammo) the Federal would sometimes overcome the problem while the Q3131a would not.  Now that the Firearm is fixed both function fine.  However based on that experience I'd say the Fed is hotter in that it pumps more gas into the gas system.

I totaly agree with Markm and Charging Handle.

But if you are woried about it why don't you by some Q3131A and some XM193  then fire a group of each. If they shoot the same then you know they have the same (or so close it dosn't mater) volocity, wind drift, energy, and ballistic coefficent.

Thanks for all of the replies!

I am going to be using this as plinking ammo, so based on price I think I will pick up some Q3131A. I think I will grab a few XM193 as well, just for the heck of it.

I believe both are good.
However, in my carbine Q3131A prints [noticeably] better groups than XM193. I found this out when sighting-in an ACOG.

$39 per 1000 is a substantial difference. I'd load-up on that Q3131A. Good ammo, great price.

I like Q3131A better.

Always sealed and less flash.

Plus it's purtier! [;D]

That is a darn good price for Q31331A - load up and if you can please ask him where he gets it so I can ask my local dealer to get me some.

Q3131/Q3131A Gets my PICK ANY DAY!

Its more accurate out of my 2 bushmaster than the FEDERAL LAKE CITY NATO XM193!CLEAN BRIGHT SHINY BEATS DIRTY SELEANT SPOTS AND LITTLE DENTS ANY DAY

Would you rather have 100 fps faster ?
Or 100fps Slower and more accurate?

I swear some Guys would rather have the Hottest M193 they could get! Rather than Finding out wich shoots the best out of there rifle and going with it even if it might cost 50 t0 100 fps SLOWER??????????

Price update: I went back to the shop today o get some Q3131A, and the price was $179...same as XM193. The kid that gave me the $150/1K case price quote was "not there"...DOH! Oh well, I bought a case anyway.

I have chronographed both through my 20" chrome-lined Bushmaster

Q3131A is about 3150 fps

XM193 is about 3250 fps.  (loaded a little too hot.)

Either one is great ammo.  Buy the one that gets the best accuracy in your gun.

Edited to add: Yes. XM193 has a very large flash. Q3131A has far less flash.

Say what you like about XM193 being dull and dinged and expensive, it is friggin hotter than the winchestor.  Lake City all the way baby!

I wash shooting Q3131A next to a guy shooting XM193 at PFDC's Carbine class in Pittsburg last week.

If Q3131A had less flash it wasn't worth noting as both of them were flame throwers.  Firing that stuff at night out of a post-ban 16" just ruins your night vision.  Thankfully I also brought my Black Hills for the night shooting.

STRONMAD  So would you take the XM193 because its hotter  than the Q3131A?

What if the Q3131A is a bit more accurate than the Lake Federal City XM193 AND HAS LESS FLASH???

Like I said above  some guys rather have the HOTTEST ROUND Not the Most Accurate Round that shoots out of there rifle?

Just think of all the Extra wear you are getting with the 100FPS hotter 5.56mm round!

BUY BOTH Q3131A AND LAKE FEDERAL CITY XM193 WITH NATO APPROVED SUPER COOL HEAD STAMP
AND FIND OUT WICH IS THE MOST ACCURATE OUT OF YOUR RIFLE! IF IT HAPPENS TO BE XM193 THAN YOU ARE GOOD TO GO!!! BUT DONT JUST BUY IT BECAUSE ITS HOTTEST M193 OUT THERE???

Its faster than the commercial Winchester (all M193 is).  It is not 'hotter' than Winchester Q3131A - at least not to any significant degree.

Buy whichever is cheaper - my preference is for the Q3131A since its QC seems to be more consistant than the XM193.

I believe XM193 is hotter.

Q3131a is more consistant(edited to say, groupwise)

If you are more concerned with defensive ammo, I'd say yeah: I would take the hotter ammo even if it is a bit less accurate. The hotter ammo will give you an edge in fragmentation range. You won't really notice any significant difference in accuracy at 200M+/-(your ammo's max fragmentaion range) anyway, so why not get the few extra meters of fragmentation range?

I will take Accruacy  over SPEED any day!
Yeah my ammo is hot but I CANT HIT WITH IT?????
Link Posted: 7/22/2003 9:48:09 PM EDT
[#23]
XM193 is accurate enugh to hit some one in the chest at 50-100 yards or more.  Wich is most likely the farthest you will have to shoot some one. If the accracy descrpency was so big that it made it so you can't hit a target the size of a human chest at said ranges, no one would be using XM193.

A defensive weapon only has to be accurate enugh to kill some one. Wich means that you sacrifice accracy for killing power. 1/2 inch groups are not nessisary so having a little bigger group and more killing potential at farther distances  is much more important than match grade accracy. Im my opinion a 3" group at 100 yards is still exeptible accracy from a weapon that is used for self defnse. Espeicial sence most self defence shootings happen at 50 yards or less.

Like I said by both Q3131a and XM193
Find wich shoots the most accurate and pick it!

Now out of my 2 bushmasters Q3131A shoots ALOT better than the XM193!

ARE YOU TELLING ME TO STICK WITH XM193 BECAUSE ITS HOTTER!

PUH LEEEEAAASEEE!!!!!

I would rather KNOW that my Q3131A is HITTING THERE MARK!

I DONT CARE IF ITS 50 to 100 fps faster!

No one is going to tell the difference between Q3131A and XM193 when hit in the chest!

I shot with both of them today again.  I like the extra bang of the XM193 but the Q3131A is more accurate with my Colt AR-15 SP1 1:12 twist chrome line bore.

I shot 130 yards with it most of the day. (800 rounds) Then I did a 25 Meter test with the scaled 250 meter target on a 8-1/2" x 11" paper. and again the Q3131A was a tighter group.  I keep several mags of each loaded along with SA 86 ammo and V-max ammo.
