Send them the serial#tell them you want verification on date of manufacture and they will send you a letter with the info.

That's very possible. You see, they had a huge run of lowers made all at once, and they were serial-numbered before being finished (anodized). Rifles were then built out of the lowers, but NOT in serial-number order. They just grabbed the top box of lowers and built rifles as orders came in. Many of the lowest-numbered receivers weren't built until just before the AW ban.

Recently at a gun show I was told that there are two differen't bans that affect AR-15's. The year 1989 was mentioned along with the one everybody is aware of, 1994. Anybody got any info on this? Mikke

In 1989, the IMPORT ban was "reinterpreted" to ban the import of "military-style" guns, based on their features. It was similar to the AW ban, but only applied to IMPORTED rifles. ARs are domestic, so it doesn't apply to them. It DOES apply to AKs, SKSs, Uzis, HKs, etc.

Troy, So it looks like I would be safe in assuming that my Colt Lightweight sporter 7.62X39 carbine which was made well before Sept '94 and came with a flash hider but no bayo lug can be converted with a collapsable stock and completely pre ban upper with bayo lug and flash hider. I live in Arizona which has no restrictions on AR's. I have a New Colt pre ban Govt. model complete upper in .223 that I'd like to use sometimes. Thanx for your help. Mikke

Your Colt, as described, is a grandfathered AW, and can be reconfigured as you describe with no legal problems. Obviously, NFA rules like barrel length and over-all length still apply.
