I was shooting Walmart White box 40 rd Winchester ammo in my AR last week and I had a round blow out my magazine, bent my extractor arm and now I have a torn off case stuck in the chamber.  I took it to the gunsmith and he immediately said that it was an overloaded round.  I called Winchester and they want me to send the weapon and all ammunition to them.  Has anyone had any experience with this, am I waisting my time sending it to Winchester?  i just want to make sure that my rifle is still safe to shoot.

First off welcome to the forum..IIWM...I would send the rifle to them. If they fix it fine, if not you are only out the UPS charges...

If you don't mind me asking, where did you buy the ammo?

As much of a pain as it is, I'd send it all to Winchester. They are very serious about the safety of their products and want to find out what went wrong. On the upside, you might get something out of helping them out too.

I have had more problems with Winchester white box pistol and rifle ammo than any other. Luckily all my problems have been fail to fire (bad primers) and a few fail to feed in some picky firearms; nothing as extreme as yours.

I had a Federal XM193 round do that too.  I didn't have a lot # or any more info. It was all mixed in my ammo can. Had to buy a new bolt.

I would skip sending winchester my rifle. Get a local gunsmith or friend to check headspace.

Make winchester replace the ammo.

After much deliberation I decided to send Winchester the rifle and ammo.  I'm hoping this won't be a waste of time.  I really didn't want to have my gun gone for that long, but am hoping Winchester stands behind it and fixes everything.   I will update any information as I get it.

I unfortunately don't have a lot number due to the fact that i took the ammo out of the box and was using a plastic carrying case and had thrown the boxes away.

You did it right.  Their examination will help them decide what happened.

Bottom line they can pick your rifle and ammo apart and will in, in all likelihood, give you the benefit of the doubt and replace the ammo and pay to repair your rifle.

If it's a combination of their ammo and your particular brand or model of rifle they'll tweak production.  They can't have something built to SAAMI standard pooping the bed across the market.
