Okay, let's conduct a pole:

What solvent do you use and why?

For me, quick cleaning jobs- Hoppe's Elite and LSA or CLP as a oil/protector.

More Serious jobs-Hoppe's No. 9 or Shooter's Choice with Sweet's 7.62, lube with LSA or CLP

I clean immediately after everytime I shoot and maybe once a quarter have to resort to using the Shooter's Choice/Sweet's treatment.

I try to minimize the chemical exposure and wear gloves as the harsher solvents go directly into your bloodstream and over time, attack your liver, eyes and CNS. Ever clean your rifle on a real hot day with Shooter's Choice and notice how you feel aftewards??

Ed's red for general cleaning

Sweets

Sharp shoot-r Wipeout foam from midway(the stuff really works) just leave it in overnight and all the copper is gone without a brush.

Hoppe's #9 for general routine cleaning - I LOVE the smell!

Sweet's for copper fouling (every other time I clean)

CLP and other lubes for lube and protection

Brake Cleaner for general hosing down as a cleaning first step

Brake cleaner and Hoppe's 9. Brake cleaner just seems to liquify any kind of nastiness. Just be sure to relube well when done. MJD

For the record, I would never us a solvent on my pole. But for cleaning and lube, I use CLP.
