Does a 5.5" flash hider have to be permanatly attached to the barrel in conveting a pistol to a rifle?  It would be neat to go back and forth.

yes. If the barrel length is less than 16", then yes the flash hider must be permanent.  I assume you are talking about a 11.5/5.5 setup.  If the FH were not permanently installed, then you would be making an illegal short barrelled rifle when you put the stock on the pistol.
