Trying to get an idea how much one covers up the gas block compared to the other one.

Go with the covered gas block, there is no advantage only disadvantages to leaving your gas block exposed.

Does the 9.0 completely cover the gas block?

Yeah, Yeah...sucka I see. I'm not new to AR's but never had a need for an AR without a standard FSB and now I do so I'm having to learn.

go with the covered gas block, ive got 4 ARs like that and i love them. like someone said earlier the is NO advantages to having an exposed gas block. Why not have it inside the rail where its protected? And 9.0 is correct for a carbine length gas system. 10.0 will also work like on the S&W MP15.
