sliced bread requires peanut butter & jelly to function properly. So, are you saying pmags require "peanut butter" to work. Next, it will be that they only work with creamy peanut butter. USGI are like crackers - you can eat them plain. they'll just be a little dry tasting.  2 1/2 thumbs up for pmags. I have totally switched over to pmags. I still have a supply of new USGI mags just in case Magpul embedded a code in the molecular chain for the pmags to self-destuct on 12/31/2011 (night before the return of the zombies) |

Pmags are much better, unless you happen to have a crappy AR that they don't fit well.
Last week a young man in Army uniform came into the gunshop I was visiting. He said he was leaving for Iraq the following day. He had the shops whole Pmag inventory (11 Pmags) in front of him at the counter. He was going back for his second tour and said he wanted to have the best mags this time since he had trouble with the USGI ones the Army issued him the last time. I bought 5 of them for him and the shop gave him the other 6 Pmags. He did put up a fight not wanting us to cover the mags for him, he lost the fight though.

They aren't more expensive at all. they are actually about the same price. But they are the BEST AR mags in the market. Since I switched over, I haven't had a single jam or feeding malfunction whatsoever. here is a LINK to prove it! Its a video to just to show you how tough they actually are.

Just to throw this out there...
The ammunition you would put in the magazine costs more than the mag does. As a percentage of total cost, the little bit of extra money you'd spend on one magazine over another is extremely small. |

I have 3 Pmags, and honestly have not even shot them yet. I prefer HK mags. I have 15 of them and they are sweet. These are my SHTF /HD mags. They are a little heavier than GI though. I have about 50 or so GI mags and they are my day to day (range, camp out shoots....) mags.
All the GI mags have new springs and green followers and I have test fired all of them to ensure they will work if I need them to. |

With some lower receivers, the PMags can be tight and not "pop" out when you hit the mag release. This is the way it is with my Mega Gator lower. It's not a strugle to get them out though, I just have to use my hand to remove the mag. Basically I can't hit the mag release and have them drop out on their own, there's enough friction there holding them from doing that. After enough use I suspect they will drop free for me, because they are getting easier and easier to pull out the more I use them.
As for cost, just be thankful you don't live here in Cali like me. I can buy straight 10 round mags which suck to get a grip on for around $11, or I can buy mags in 20 or 30 round bodies that are blocked to only accept 10 rounds. But these mags cost $25-30. It hurts everytime I go onto the EE mag section and see 30 round PMags selling for like $13 and knowing I have to pay 2.5 times that to get the same mags and they only accept 1/3 of the rounds...  I envy you and your strugle over spending 1/2 of what I have to pay.

Thanks everyone for your replies and also for bringing the Mag Forum to my attention. I went ahead and had Palmetto Armory throw 10 of the P Mags in with my 1000 rounds of xm193 I ordered on Wednesday... So I guess I am goin to sip the P Mag Kool-Aid which is fine by me considering I am already drinking the COLT Cool-Aid. HAHA !

Funny as I bought a bunch of PMAGS the day I got my gun, and I still like USGI-styled mags anyway and have been buying those of late. I like to mix em all up a little bit, go figure.

i'll take all of the PMags i can get. 20's or 30's
all of my "good" USGI mags are in my backup gear. i've all but thrown out my used USGI's i've been ordering my PMags from DENNY's and LaRue. when i place an order i add 1 or 2 each time. i've got a small box of em that i've never even taken out of the plastic. |

I have had good luck with USGI mags. I just ordered 3 pmags tho. I figure I'd sip the pmag cool-aid too.

I will admit the PMAG is an outstanding improvement over USGI...but I have two Armalite ARs and my PMAGs won't drop free from them.
Interestingly, they drop free flawlessly from my Bushmaster. |

I have a 20 round straight colt mag that fits very very tightly in my Mega. It will not drop free. I tried it in my doublestar and it drops free from it. So I will see when I get them if they will fall free from the mega.

I like the PMag, that's pretty much all the mag I get now.
There's one problem with Pmag design...........Pmag won't fit FS2000!!!!!!! So if they ever come out with a Pmag design that fit FS2000, then that'd make it perfect. Otherwise they fit perfectly in AR or Sig556. |

Consider measuring the inside dimensions of your lower. If it's out of spec, contact Mega. The one I have is actually a replacement because the original had an undersized magazine well. In this case, living less than a mile from Mega Machine Shop had its advantages.

I am picking up 3 FDE 20 rounders this week. That will give a total of six PMAGS, 3 20 and 3 30 all FDE. Maybe I will trade my (new) 30s for 3 more 20s. That would be a great way to tell them apart.....
What kind of mag pouches will hold the 20s? |

Are they necessary? No. Are they better than USGI mags? Maybe, maybe not. Do I want them... You bet!
I already have my fill of USGI mags, so now I am working on building a small stockpile of PMAGs. |
