I am building a 20" flat top and I will need some optics for it. I will be punching paper at 200 yards. Not in competition but just for fun. Can I buy an affordable scope that does not look like it came off of my grandfathers deer rifle? I would love to hear recommendations.

Midway has some killer deals on Nikon. I keep hearing the Monarchs are real good.

I just bought a Nikon Monarch 6.5 x 20 x 44 ~ $140 less than what Opticsplanet is asking.

Maybe someone could chime in on their impression of this scope.

What specific price range is "affordable" for you? Do you mean $200-$500? Lower? Higher?

I would say 200-400.

I just shoot iron sights. I was hoping someone else would jump in, since nobody has I'll give you some examples that fit your price range...

Low end of your price range (Leatherwood 3-9x Auto Ranging):

$279 at swfa

Cool thing is that it comes with it's own mounting hardware so you don't have to spend an extra $100 on rings.

High end of your price range (Leupold VX-2 Variable):

www.swfa.com/c-86-leupold-vx-ii-riflescopes.aspx

Obviously, you'll need a base that will mount the scope forward and give you enough eye relief. Armalite sells one for about $100.

You might also check the riflescopes.com and opticsplanet.com forum for more information.
