So I bought a laser thermometer and decided to do some testing. It’s currently 95* with little to no cloud cover. I grabbed the four unmounted rails I have handy.
1. Ruger factory black MLOK rail. 2. Geissele Mk4 black. 3. Geissele Mk8 DDC. 4. CMT DRT rail. I let them sit in the sun for about 35 minutes. Temperature at placement was between 68 and 70 degrees. I set them on plastic flower pots to keep heat soak minimized. On to the results from lowest to highest. 114.6* - Geissele Mk8 DDC. 122.9* - Ruger MLOK. 125.3* - Geissele Mk4 black. 126.6* - CMT DRT. I’m not surprised the DDC won out. I do a lot of shooting outdoors and FDE has always been considerably cooler than black. Pretty basic science here. What did surprise me was CMT DRT. I wouldn’t think it would be hotter than the black rails, never the less the hottest. What point does this test have? Well, use rail covers and gloves. As you shoot your rifle will cool down slower the hotter it is outside but I think we all knew that. The real benefit to this test is you can now go to your wife and say upgrading parts to tandodized isn’t a sick obsession, it’s actually for safety. ![]() ETA: A few degrees warmer with a bit less wind today. All gained less than 5 degrees but color didn’t matter after an hour on aluminum. Won’t hijack the topic any further and posted todays testing HERE. |

A lot of the parts would need to be finished in it from the get go versus third party application. Gold titanium nitride is rare for AR barrels just because of the color, but there are multiple sources for bolts and barrels in that hue. The first company to get FDE nitride barrels and bolt groups out will make an absolute killing and it’s only a matter of time. ETA: I just posted in PSA’s industry forum asking them to consider offering tanodize and FDE nitride. I’m genuinely amazed they don’t already offer tanodize as is. https://www.ar15.com/forums/Industry/FDE-Nitride-and-tanodize/301-304543/ |

I had a 13.7 barrel pinned and welded by John Thomas of Retro Arms works a few years back and he made a custom spacer that was around 5/16 of an inch plus the appropriate shims to time the Surefire 3 Prong Warcomp in order to get to a legal length of 16 inches. A 13.9 inch barrel won't make the cut either based on the 1.875 inches that the 51T adds to the barrel. You can mock it up and measure, but just the math alone with a 13.9 and the 51T comes out to 15.775 inches. |

Appreciate the response. I'll get to the bottom of it and put it here once the rifle is built. I'll pin something else on it's no big deal.

Not tano but I know a lot of people were using Sal at Redacted Concepts as he was kind of a pioneer in replicating anodizing using Cerakote. He’s disappeared with a bunch of peoples guns and is likely under investigation.
