Noveske is now offering it with a lighter profile. it's heavier than i need a semi AR to be. i'm having mine re-contoured.

Funcional reliability is #1, but I'm not looking for a bullet hose. I'm looking for something where every shot counts, but is still appropriate on occasions when those shots happen in rapid succession.

You could always flute the barrel, keeping the barrel's rigidity and increasing surface area, which enhances cooling properties. wp |

So how does an Afghan type profile compare in weight and balance to a typical 14.5" HBAR profile?

Considering a typical 14.5" has a CAR gas system, and this one has a MID gas system, it would have more meat "under the handguards". Looking at the drawing above, this barrel seems to have been designed as a mission specific piece. Theres a reason you dont see skinny/light weight profile SS barrels. The next one someone sends me to flute, I'll weight before and after, and compare to a CAR gas system 16" barrel. I'm kinda surprised by the number of people who buy something, then spend more money into making it something else. Isnt Denny still offering his SS Recon barrels? |

I'm looking for the following characteristics in my next barrel:
1) Reliability. 2) 16" OAL with a permenantly-attached YHM-5C1. 3) Accuracy appropriate for ammunition commonly available under combat conditions, optical sighting devices up to 4X and a match trigger group. 4) As light weight as possible, keeping in mind goals #1-3. This may mean a stainless 14.5" mid-weight with a mid-length gas system and a Wylde chamber, or some similar variation. |

It would be hard to buy a barrel that didnt meet those requirements, just choose where you want to compromise. The 16" OAL is kinda silly since you are only doing it for looks, and I dont understand why its even mentioned when you listed #1 as reliability. I'd suggest Denny's RECON barrel in SS or chrome lined 16" MID. Or, one of my MID SS 16" barrels but they are heavier than what you are looking for, unless you wanted them fluted. Define what you need and buy what you want. |

I'm too old to care about what looks cool.
The OAL requirement is because the extra 1.5" makes all the difference in the world when clearing an interior doorway or bailing out of a vehicle. Price was not listed as a criteria. There's no point in flushing perfectly good money down the toilet with an uber-barrel, but I don't generally consider price when making decisions about a tool for this intended role. |

Quit yer bitchin and leave it be, cause you are saving what, 7-8 oz? By the time you add all the tactical beercan holders and bottleopeners you are up to a 9 lb carbine.
Personally, I don't think my 16 inch RECON barrel isn't as heavy as you guys seen to think they are. Balances perfectly with a DD9.0 rail. By the time I add a bipod and a scope it'll be even better. Course I don't think my 17 lb DCM Service rifle is heavy either . . .  |
