I finished my middy build several months ago and have broken it in.  It runs great and have not had any stoppages.  Im not a total noob to the AR as I have built several for friends/family but this one is my first AR and I am more familiar with the AK platform.  My question is about the non rotating trigger/hammer pins - are they worth it?  Ive been looking at these pin retainers and don't know if its necessary but I have noticed my pins backing out just slightly after some rapid shooting/quick mag changes.  I did a search and didn't find anything.  My carbine is not suppressed and is semi only.  Recommendations?  Discuss.

If it ain't broken, don't fix it

Waste of money IMHO

All mine are standard pins and to this day and thousands of rounds I have shot I have never had an issue with pins giving a problem.

Been shooting semi since 1979 and FA since 1983 and have never had any wear become evident in a lower. Spend that money on ammo.

Nay.

Install your trigger and hammer springs correctly and those pins are in there. As for concerns about egging the pi  holes...How many rounds do military rifles see oer a lifetime, and do those pin holes egg-out?

What he said.
Install the spring correctly and the pins won't come out.
The hammer spring should wind out from the bottom and the
natural tension from unwinding, will put the needed tension on the
trigger pin to keep it from sneaking out.

Technically they are not necessary, but some people really like them.
They don’t work well with some FCGs.
They are an added complication if disassembly is needed in the field.
The regular pins rotate in the holes in the lower causing wear over time.

I found them useful to fix a lower that seemed to be out of spec.  Standard pins were just too loose.  KNS fixed that problem, however that was a pretty crappy lower I have never run across that before or since.

When you say out of spec how far out do you mean?  My build is on one of the infamous AR57 from AIM lowers.  I think its just barely in spec but most were way out and had to be sent back in.

I bought them because honestly, they look cool to me.  They don't do jack squat for my AR though.  It's up to you if you want to spend the extra $35 bucks.

If you installed your fire control group correctly then
there is absolutely no need for anti-rotation / anti-walk pins.

If you like the way they look go for it, but if you have an
upgraded trigger like a Geissele it might actually be detrimental to your
trigger’s performance.

Pretty much useless, but I have FDE set on a FDE build to match everything else. I would never put them in any serious AR. Need to be able to break down with no tools.

I had a designated 22 AR that I had the trigger pins walk out on me every couple mags.  I ended up putting some KNS pins in them and problem fixed.  I never had an issue with any of my other lowers though.

This was the advice I received from Geissele regarding a registered SBR 9mm lower; Iv'e reverted to the standard Geissele pins for just that reason.
I believe the issue was tolerances.

I just want to add that there are JP Insustries anti-walk pins (which, by their nature don't rotate either) for $10.00 a set.  Look them up if that interests you.

I have them on all my AR's, if everyone thinks they are a waste of money that's fine with me. It's MY money!

One thing that has not been brought up, if you go to the Pistol caliber and Rimfire section, you will find they are HIGHLY recommended to prevent hammer pin failure (Breakage) which is common on rimfire conversions and 9mm AR's.

Nay. Waste of money. Between SWAT & PSD in Iraq I have thousands of rounds on full-auto alone and never needed them. No one on any of the teams I've been on needed or used them. The military doesn't use them and I'd say a lot of those weapons get used and abused more than most.

For functionality, they're a waste of money but for the "cool" factor, they're worth every cent.

When I put my first lower together I had an issue with the trigger pin walking.  I thought it was just a freak thing the first time I came back from the range but after three trips it happened every time.  I tried another pin and it did the same thing.  I had the Spikes standard lower kit and noticed that the enhanced kit came with the KNS pins.  My LGS I do a lot of business with also recommend the KNS pins. Another pro is that KNS is fairly local to me and I don't mind giving local businesses my money.  Easy to install and problem solved.

Bingo! it was an AR57.

It was workable but I did get rid of it.

Mine came out pretty good, guess I got lucky.  Mine is in the 9100 S/N range.  Sorry you had to send yours back.  That's why Im hesitant to post pics of my gun, if folks see the rollmark they might get pissed; not trying to start a shitstorm.  I didn't know about the problems until after I ordered the lower, but somehow I got lucky and got one that was "close enough".  It runs great, no problems yet.  Built on a PSA 16" Middy w/WW  M16 BCG and a PSA Lower Assembly Kit.  I guess I have a rare lower now...

NAY !    Besides I use Geissele FCGs and Bill says not to use anything but his pins. I've never had a problem with my pins walking out or wallowing the holes. My first BCM mid-length has over 10,000 rounds fired through it and that's not from a bench. A friend has a M-16 (NFA) which he bought in 1986 and has burned countless rounds through it at Knob Creek and his pins have never walked and the lower is just fine.

If your trigger pin is walking out like that your hammer spring is installed wrong. It's either on the hammer backwards or the legs are not on top of the trigger pin. The fix is free.

Well then congratulations, you have the one freak AR15 / M16 out of the millions that have been built without KNS pins and have operated properly since the 1950's. Imagine that.

So I suppose you're telling us that your lower is built out of spec then? Because barring that the two reasons above are why AR15 trigger pins walk out.

ETA: BTW It is not uncommon for your local LGS to be unfamiliar with how an AR lower is assembled. It is simple enough, but I have seen the hammer spring installed wrong many times, and there is a post here almost weekly about the very thing you are describing.

if i had a $10,000 m16 lower, that i was going to shoot the crap out of, i think it would be cheap insurance to keep from possible tearing it up.  the full auto guys that i knew ran them to keep the holes from wearing out ...to each his own!!
