I'm a total newbie to the AR and I've got a question. I've got a chance to buy a pre ban Colt SP-1 upper from a buddy. It's an early (I think) Colt lightwieght upper, 20" barrel and no foward assist. I noticed the front pin hole on the upper is larger than the pin in my lower. Is there a bushing or something available to adapt this to the newer lowers or will it only work on an old lower? I know it's not useable on my lower as is but if it can be adapted to work with my lower, I'm thinking of buying it just to put aside in case the ban sunsets next year. The upper was changed out by his dad years ago and the gun was eventualy sold with the new upper. He ran across the SP1 upper the other day cleaning out the attic and has no need for it. I can get it pretty cheap so I may pick it up even if I can't use it.

The offset adapter you are looking for is available from Bushmaster. It's not expensive, $7 or $8.

Since you stated that
the front pin hole on the upper is [red]larger[/red] than the pin in my lower

this is what you need: http://www.bushmaster.com/shopping/lowers/we-003.asp. The offset pin that has been suggested above adapts Colt large hole lowers to small hole upper receivers. You have the opposite problem and need the Reverse Offset Pin.

Thanks, the reverse offset pin is the right one. I was thinking the other way around.
