Hi there everyone. I've been craving an AR-15 for quite some time, so I finally took the plunge and bought one. I went to a local gun shop and grabbed a slightly-used Bushmaster XM15-E2S. It's a postban weapon styled after the M4 (has a pinned stock, 16" barrel, sling, and so on). Now that I've snagged one, I have a few questions. First, with ammo.

I'm only going to really be target shooting with this gun for quite some time, so I was wondering what the best ammo would be to target shoot with. I'm just looking for some cheap, reliable ammo that won't foul my gun up. I see that Wolf is the cheapest, but I've heard that it can foul guns up pretty easily. Also on the subject of ammo, for target shooting, would I be better off buying .223 or 5.56 ammo?

For magazines, is there any place in particular that I could find a 5-round magazine (for legal hunting) and a 30-round magazine for target shooting? I don't need anything spectacular, just something functional and not too expensive.

I guess also what I'm asking if to make this topic into an open forum of some sorts. If anyone has any useful advice, tips, or warnings to post, I would appreciate it greatly. You'd be helping a novice in the process. Thanks in advance!

For ammo, you've got alot of reading; ammo-oracle.com there are magazine forums for discussion on the AR15 board, and for sale on the EE board.

Greetings & Enjoy your new Bushmaster! Ammo, read the Ammo-Oracle like notack suggested. For .223 on the cheap try AE223, Win USA223R1 in the value packs, PMP comercial box. For 5.56: Win Q3131a, Federal XM193, SA Battlepacks, Portugese surplus, Guatemalan surplus. Mags, stick with USGI or US Thermolds. Stay far away from cheap-o USA brand mags! ~ s0ulzer0

notack pretty much covered it. Have fun with your Bushmaster. You made a good choice. My first AR was a Bushy also. Welcome to the board! [beer] Eric

Is using 5.56 surplus (which I hear is the best for plinking) going to be worse for my weapon than .223? Also, does anyone know a good spot to grab surplus 5.56 ammo?

Your Bushmaster M4 barrel is 5.56 chambered and chrome lined. You have no worries! It was made to shoot milspec 5.56 ammo. You can blast anything 5.56 or .223 thru it. Enjoy! You can buy mil surplus ammo at gun shows or all over online, also check your local shops. It's finding a good price that takes time. Hey, I hate to sound like a complete newb, but is 5.56 the same as 5.56X45? I'm assuming it is but I figure it's better to know for sure.

Let me some up the ammo question for you. Winchester Q3131A www.ammoman.com

www.coledistributing.com South African Surplus .223 Just don't expect 990 rounds to last you very long. Those little brown 30 round boxes are like beer. Once you empty one, you just can't stop.

Welcome to the madness, I also have a Bushy M4, shoots great with south African surplus as well as Winchester Q3131A, I have even used some ammo from Centerfiresystems.com, that were a little corroded on the bullet but the Bushy shoot every thing I put in it, But so did my other AR's. Enjoy and let us know what your next AR will be.

I found what seems to be a pretty good deal: http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/ctd/product.asp?sku=68258&mscssid=9WPFMCHF882K8HWEMFVC2VF0B9E85QF3 About 18 cents a shot. I'm not sure if Metal Case Boat-tail is a bad round to plink with or not.

That's the Federal XM193. Good stuff. You shouldn't have any problems with it. The brass is also excellent with that stuff. If you don't reload, save it for a friend who does. They will appreciate it. Eric

Another quick question (I appreciate all the help already), is sighting in my Bushmaster going to be difficult? I'm a novice when it comes to this as well.

Ignore all that 25 yd stuff, and zero your rifle at 50 yards as described in the Santose method. Read the article again, make sure you understand it. Ask questions if you don't. This will give you the flattest trajectory for PRACTICAL shooting ranges where you really have a chance to hit what you are aiming at with iron sights, 0-250 yards.

You need to check whether you can hunt with a semi-auto in Maine....in PA it is illegal, 5 round magazines or not. RugerCal480 (Mike)

It's legal to hunt with a semi-auto in Maine, you just cannot have more than 5 rounds at once.

Hello again. I hate to be paranoid, but I was wondering if it's normal for there to be a *little* wiggle between the upper and the lower section of the XM15-E2S?
Link Posted: 6/15/2003 3:37:56 PM EDT
Yeah, its normal. Some are worse than others. They have stuff like the "Accu-wedge" to help with that, if you feel it is a real problem to you. Eric

A little bit of play is normal in a pre-owned AR, like you said yours was. No big deal. If it gets worse or just bugs you, get an AccuWedge like holeshot4 suggested. To answer your next question: Yes, you can see thru a thin "slot" between your upper/lower. It is normal. [:D] ~ s0ulzer0

I found another ammo deal online, M193 Ball. Does this look like reputable ammo? I've heard Wolf ammo is pretty bad so I'm leery of any foreign bullets, and this stuff is greek. Any opinions would be welcome. http://www.sportsmansguide.com/cb/cb.asp?p=WX2&i=71628

I've never used the Greek Olympic ammo, but I've heard bad things. Here is a thread about it that is tacked at the top of the Ammunition Forum: http://ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=16&t=149562 ~ s0ulzer0
