I have been building an AR for long range precision work and have been trying to decide on a pistol grip. I thought about the foxbat because I wanted one that would fill my hand and have a thumb ledge but didnt want to spend $50.00 for a grip I would have to rework anyways so I took a normal A2 grip and reworked it tonight adding a palm swell and a thumbledge custom fit to my hand. Tell me what you think.
I used screws for anchor points and epoxy putty to mold it all, I then shaped it with a dremel and sand paper, then stippled it.         |

Not sure yet, the stuff I used is supposed to be used to repair steel on engine blocks so if it dont work on this then I dont know what to use but ti feels very solid. Also it is all reenforced with screws to add strength.

Great idea! Looks great. Wondering about the durability myself. Not that I plan on fighting a war with mine but I wouldn't want a big chunk of epoxy falling off at the range......

When I was stippling it I was wacking it pretty hard with the hammer and punch and it didnt give at all. Time will tell tho.

I may do one of mine tomorrow. What bit did you use on the Dremel? Did it clog up the bit or did it just powder when you started shaping it? |

I used a sanding drum. The epoxy and the grips plastic both just turned to powder.

If it's perfect shape wise, I'd make a mold so it can be redone or find a plastics guy to make it for you. Nice job, nothing quite like something made just for you. |

I think I might make a spare grip just in case, and I might try some other compounds also. The grip fits my hand perfect like it is but I like to tinker so we will see what we make.

If I were a lefty and looking for ideas on where to start for making a left handed SPR styled grip, those pics and instructions would go a long way to help.

Nice. I wish I had an excuse to do something like this myself but sadly the G27 I got at Cabela's fits my hand suprisingly well.
What's the time and monetary cost of this project? |

This deserves a tack IMHO. What kind of Epoxy putty, where can it be found? Auto parts stores? Nice STAG too.

nice work.
would like to know how it holds up as well, i have used a lot of that steel in a bottle stuff and if it doesnt bond well with the host item it just cracks off. |

There was some stuff I used on my bow when I shot 3D a few years ago. I think it was called Form-A-Grip. You basically just slop it on (it's kind of a putty). Grab the grip on the bow and form it with your hand the way you want it. Let it set up and do a final fit when it dries. Don't know where to find it but I would bet that a bow supply would have it.
By the way that does look pretty sweet. |

I used FastSteel from Home Depo. I cant take the credit for the idea tho, it was posted in snipersparadise.com in the rifle forum, if anyone is interested I would suggest going there and checking it out. The guy that posted it says he has used this method to build up several palm swells on rifle stocks so I am hopeful it works, I would hate to ruin a 6 dollar pistol grip
 As for overall cost, about 12 bucks.

Cir-Cuit Archery Products makes Form-a-Grip.
Cabela's sells it for $15. Cir-Cuit says that it is an epoxy materiel. I wonder how durable it would be on an AR? |

It could handle the shock from a radical cam bow set to 65lbs. so I think it would do fine for an AR pistol grip. Especially if it was molded around a standard grip. |
