I'm guessing here, that you had regular hand guards on the rifle first and took them off?
If that's the case, you will need a shim between the gb and the shoulder of the barrel to properly place the gb on the gas hole. That will take up some of the bare metal space, then you can do a few things to cover up the remainder of the exposed metal. Duracoat Gun-Kote 44/40 Gun Creme Oxpho-Blue |

I was going to take it out for a test run tomorrow to check if it is running properly. I think the gas hole on the barrel is line up with the one on the block, but if it isn't, nothing catastrophic will happen, will it? It will just not cycle or short stroke, correct?

go shoot it first to see if your gas system is all lined up and working right, the gas block could just be pushed to far back.........remember that 1mm thick handguard cap isnt there anymore
