Probably the single thing I was most impressed with at SHOT 2006 was the new ELCAN sight. Its callled the Specter DR, and it is a 1x red dot optic with an etched reticle with 5.56mm range adjustment marks, combined with a 4x sight. The sight is instantly switchable between 1x-4x with a quick flip of a lever, with no change of POI, no change in cheeck weld, etc. The dot is adjustable in brightness, or you can illuminate the entire crosshair. The optical clarity was at least the equal of anything else out there. The sight was about the same size as a full size ACOG, and MSRP is $800 IIRC.

iirc dealer price is well above that.

Everything else is as I understood it.

I know a few people were real excited about this optic, there was always a huge crowd around it when I went by, saw the lit from another guy, looks very promising. As I understood it they have a few ready to ship.

They are in EE on pre order already.

$1499.00

Once I found out they lied and the exit pupil and eye relief changed with magnification switches which their website says it does not and its NOT a 1X sight on the low end I lost all faith in the sight and in Elcan. The external adjustments were already the dumbest thing ever in optics but it was almost something you could over look to get a 1-4X optic with the features I wanted. Then again its not a 1-4X sight at all.... Good idea and cheap too. Its too bad. Back to saving money on a Short Dot.

If it's not 1x, then what is it really?

One system does it all. Just a throw of a lever to go from
CQB to distance shooting. Very smart design.

+1

I tried it and decided it was not what I had hoped. On 1x it is not like an AIMPOINT. It has a fixed eye relief and is a 1x 'scope' that you need a specific eye relief. I would rather have a Nightforce 1-4x.

Not exactly. It is still a scope and not a red-dot sight.
