My Dad caught the AR bug from shooting my tricked out RRA carbine and decided to get one of his own AR.  He called every gun store around looking for ARs and spoke with one store owner who says he has a brand new Colt flattop with a 20" stainless HBAR barrel, low pro gas block and a round forend for $1345.  I did not think that Colt sold to the civilian market anymore.  Also, I don't see this particular rifle on Colt's website.  My initial impression is that this must be a rifle that was built with an old Colt receiver but the shop owner says it's all new Colt.  Anyway my Dad put a deposit on the gun and is planning to buy it Friday.  Anyone have any ideas what could be the deal here?

Thanks in advance,

Sounds like the Colt CR6724 Accurized Rifle, which isn't new nor is it 20" bbl. (it is 24")

Unless your goal is a base gun to build a bench-rest shooter, there are many better options from Colt.

But deciding the use for the rifle should be first, and what I like or others may be quite different than your Dad's

Most opt for the 16" barrels, flat op uppers, collapsible stocks, etc. maybe because we may not have the option for long, or because they are far more versatile for home defense, plinking, competition, and all round fun to shoot

Look around before buying the first available rifle - would be my humble advice.

Your dad should go take a look at it and if he likes it he should then buy it. Resale value in times like these are very high especially for a Colt rifle

sounds like the model 6724 but it should have a 24 inch barrel. these are very accurate rifles best used for target shooting and varmit hunting.

Yeah I saw that rifle on their site, everything fits except the 24" barrel.  They guy said 20" but he may be mistaken.  Anyway Dad found a bunch of rifles but has always kicked himself for selling his Colt Match rifle a few years ago especially now that they're getting harder to find.  I personally prefer to custom build my ARs myself but I think this is going to be the one for him.  He wants a longer rifle now and I'm going to build him a 16" upper later.    I was just under the impression that you couldn't buy a new Colt AR as a civilian anymore and was wondering if this guy was trying to put one over on ole' Dad.

For that price I'd consider buying it and sending it to Adco to have the barrel cut back to 16" since I like my ARs more compact. Make a great varmint, coyote gun.

Yeah I don't know about 16" with the gas block placement but 20 or 22" might be nice.
