Hello all, I'm not too new to guns but very new to AR-15 and variants. I was trying to decide on a band of rifle to buy and had heard some things about Bushmasters from owners. I finally found what I thought was a good deal on a lightly used M4A3 from a small local gun shop that my family has been buying through for years.

I thought I wanted a Colt but found out rather quickly that I couldnot afford one so I went ahead and bought the Bushy. It supposedly only has around 100-120 rounds through it and appearance wise, it's in excellent shape.

My father is retired Military so I handed it over to him and he tore it down and looked at everything and said it des look pretty good.

After reading on here intensely, I've noticed quite a few Bushmaster 'haters' and got a little paranoid about owning one now. I'm just hoping they are reliable I guess. I plan on using and modding this one until I figure out what other combos or brands of AR's I want to add to the collection

Anyway, I look forward to learning as much as possible since I am very new to these rifles SO, expect a lot of dumb questions coming from me in the future.

I'm also ready to order a few windowed PMAGS when they are finally in stock somewhere and also looking for lighting system as well as a sight setup.

Here she is in all of her bushy hated glory:

M4A3
Hoague Grip
Surefire Quad rail

Aloha Nutro and welcome to the forum.  I am also new to AR-15 variants and my first rifle is the RRA Entry Tac.  I heard good things about RRA and pricing was good for what I got so I bought it.  What will be my next AR variant?  A Bushmaster Modular Carbine.  Yes there are many Colt fanboi members and the pony rifle is of great quality but I felt that Bushmaster is also a good company that makes a rifle I will be happy with from what I've been reading.  It is so funny that I went to another forum site and over there they like Bushmaster over Colt.  To each their own.  Shoot what you buy and enjoy the shit out of it.

Enjoy your new Bushmaster.  I know I will enjoy mine.

Get mags and ammo.
Don't get mags and clips mixed up.

Welcome aboard

I own both Colt & Bushmaster. I'd say you can't go wrong with either. Bushmaster has had some issues in the past, but they are very reliable, and accurate weapons. Don't worry about your choice of brand, just concentrate on having fun with it.

The only thing you may need is the .040 taller Front Sight Post, if you have any problems with elevation when zeroing.

You can feel good about your rifle. I've put thousands of rounds through my Bushy and dont have any probs with it. Take care of it and it will take care of you. The only Colts I've ever handled were military issue weapons that have had the crap kicked out of them, so I can't say for sure whether or not the civilian versions are better weapons. Having said that, don't believe everything you hear. I have heard that Colt makes an outstanding weapon, but I don't own one. I know first hand that Bushmaster makes an outstanding weapon. Nice rifle. Enjoy!

Don't worry about it being a Bushy.  I've had several and never had issue with them except for an SBR that had problems typical of an SBR, but were easy enough to fix.
There is a lot of arms race/brand war on here.  The Pony People get real sensitive about it, and if you decide to start accessorizing your rifle, get ready for even more of it.
Depending on what part of the state you're in you might have a very healthy shootign group around you.  Check in on the Hometown forum and you'll see a lot of activities.  The Houston and DFW crews are pretty active, and the East Texas and Austin reas are picking up a lot.
Welcome to BRD, welcome to the site, and start buying mags, ammo, training, and gear.  Especially if you plan on getting amrried at some point.  Wimmenz don't often understand our afflictions.

Do not worry about it being a Bushmaster.

You should be happy!

Bushmasters are excellent rifles, and those "bushmaster haters' are simply Colt fans that do  not like competition.

Haha yeah I used to call mags 'clips' but realized the difference when I was corrected a few times by my brother.

I really want to order some damn PMAGS but they are out of stock everywhere I have called.

I also don't know shit about sights but so far I am looking at EOTECH or the ACOG system but don't have that kind of money to spend yet.

Also, I wastold to avoid the WOLF ammo but I've read several people on here saying they have zero issues running it through bushy's

I searched around the ammo forum but left still feeling a little confused as to what ammo is a good all around, plinking ad range ammo, nothing sporting or target.

Any input?

I'll get all of the basic questions out of the way now.

My bushy eats Wolf like... Michael Moore at a Democratic fundraiser buffet.

Wolf is fine for doing mag dumps and basic fun but bad for target shooting. The stuff is pretty inconsistent.

Don't worry about the Bushy Haters. If it works it works doesn't matter what brand it is. I have multiple Colts and Bushmasters and have had no problems with either. Keep it lubed and feed it good ammo

While I have some people replying (and thanks for the replies) I have one question that I might get flamed for.

Is there any way to get my bushy to 3 round burst status? I was assuming it was just a different trigger group but there has to be more to it aside from the legal standpoint.

I eventually want to add a sound suppressor but from what I understand, it's a lot of paperwork and BS to go through AND uncle sam tags you on owning one. I also understand that I would have to have my barrell machined to accept an A2 flash hider for suppressor use. I could be way off base though.

Thanks for the help guys and gals.

NO!!!

There is absolutley no legal way to do this without buying a Registered Drop In Auto Sear, referred to here as a RDIAS, and plan to spend well over 10,000 just for that peice.

Just an 'Update' of sorts I guess.

I ordered a half dozen windowed 30 round PMAGS and bought their enhanced trigger guard (Spur of the moment. I hope it was a good decision) today and I also called Kevin at Brightflashlights and ordered a PentagonLights  L2-HA (3W) and a Vltor ring mount today with a couple light filters.

Next on the list is:

More Mags
Magpul stock
Sling

Ordered them from a very nice lady at MAGPUL today. They have the black windowed version in stock now and will have the colored mags in 7-10 days if I recall correctly.

There is another way... But I don't recommend it Unless you want a Butt Lover named "Bubba", so I suggest you don't.

Nice looking AR.

As far as the Ruger, I've seen A LOT of people bash them but that pistol has been around the family over the years with probably 2-3 thousand rounds through it without any major problems. It rarely gets used these days though
