Hello,

I just picked up a woodland set of Krylon camo paints...to practise a bit I thought about doing an old Ruger 10/22 factory stock. Here are some observations so far...Like everybody else I did a Khaki base color...only to find out it was complete waste of paint as when I started adding other colors the khaki base got 95% covered. It turned out to be a bit tricky to paint in "negative"...a few times I ended up realizing I'd need to do certain sections all over again...also, trying to work a cool looking woodland camo pattern  from top of my head turned out to be hard. Further, it was really hard to keep the overall appearance balanced..."this part is way too light..and this is way too dark" became my mantra.

So, if you happen to have any tips on how to paint a kick ass woodland scheme I'd be grateful. Thanks.

I had a hard time painting my m1a stock also. I used the same paints aand started with khaki first, then i used paper and cutout shapes and used a reposionable glue to hold them down and then sprayed the olive drab over it. then i did the same for the brown and then i added a little black.  But when i was done there was to much brown, so i think if i just did a little brown and a little black it might of came out better. I have pics of my stock if you want to look at it. I could e-mail you if you want. Im still not sure if i like it or not though.

Hello Gang!
I know there are a lot of guys who take camo painting
to much higher level than I have, but I'll tell you what I
did & that I have no camo AR's in my safe yet.
When I bought my first SKS I hated the red stock...
I did a base coat in OD, then added brown & tan
stripes or blotches. I then used a flat black can of
Sherwin Williams (I think it was S/W) because it had
a fan spray nozzle. This allowed me to start a pass up
close moving in line with the fan, so that it was real
crisp & sharp & then as I moved the can I could back
off ( more distance between nozzle & surface) & turn the
can to broaden & feather that stripe. It worked pretty well.
I was obviuosly going for a woodland pattern. Again, very
low tech, but it worked for me. I ran across a folder stock
for this rifle years ago & I still need to paint it to match the
scope & upper handguard, rec'r, etc. I don't shoot it much
because of my not so recently aquired BRD. I think I'll put it
on my list pre-spring firearm projects. I'll see if I can find
that stock & post pics, if anyone is interested. LMK

I used the Krylon Camo paint, too.

i also tried to do a base coat of tan, and it didnt work out. I wound up using OD as my base coat and then went from there. I also painted mine outside so i could see what it would look like in natural light. I just changed my upper, and installed a freefloat tube so i will have to paint it all again. I used rustoleum(sp?) camo line ultra flat paint.

You guys have apparently gotten the
tan base coat idea from somewhere. I
would think that would be appropriate for a
desert pattern, but not so much for woodland.
I think some of the digital patterns are too
cool. But I still don't see me painting any of
my AR's for a while. But it's nice to know how,
just in case...

Its a shame the pics are gone, that was a decent thread, and it would have been nice to put in a refinishing forum.....

Stretch,
 Your rifle looks great.
I chuckled when I saw the pics because
it's exactly opposite of mine rifle. I have bought
a lot of field mags, so most of them had little
or no finish left, but I make sure they work.
Because the finish was so bad, I have camo
painted all of them. I know exactly which ones
are mine at the range...

Nice work!

Stretch--
This is great!  We're all the same:  $10,000 in kitchen improvements still don't prohibit us from posing our EBR's on the granite countertop agains the oak cabinets!

Also,
Previous research on this topic pointed out to go ahead and spray your rifle with browns, tans, greens, black, etc., but at the end, "dust" it with green or brown--not so much as to make it a solid color again, but just to fuzz sharp lines between colors and subdue the overall contrast between colors a bit more.  Just hold the can back almost to the point the paint doesn't even hit, but make a few fast passes from a foot away to "dilute" the strength of all the other colors.

Another method is to throw a piece of mesh over the rifle, and spray your last two colors through the mesh at your first two colors--this looks killer, and again helps knock down strong dark or bright colors!

If anyone can find the pic of the rifle from the US Optics booth at the SHOT Show with the snakeskin camo job,... THAT's what I'm talking about!

No, the weapon forums don't get the attention that the other areas do.
