Let me preface this by saying that guns are a hobby of mine, snakes are my real passion.

Having said that, I am considering my first re-finish job. I wanted to do something a little different.
So what better inspiration than some of natures most stealthy animals?

So I have narrowed it down to two possible camouflage patterns.

1) The North American Copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix)

2) The African Gaboon Viper (Bitis gabonica)

So which would look best on an AR?
And has anyone tried this approach before?

Thanks.

Both look like they would make a cool and effective camo setup. I think it comes down to where you will be using the rifle...

If you were going to go roll around in a sandbox for a while, I would suggest the copperhead pattern, as it has more of a sandy coloration.

On the other hand, if you were going to a more heavily wooded area I would go with the second pattern (the viper pattern)

BTW I think this is a really cool idea and I can't wait to see how it turns out!

I seriously did not see a snake in the top pic when I looked at it the first time.  I still cant see his head.

I don't see them either.......until the lawn mower makes this thump noise and spits them out.

You should focus on foilage in your area and foilage that's at least 2 feet above  the ground. Snakes blend in great on the floor of any woods area.

Hello,

I'd go with the NA copperhead.  The darker reds will blend in better overall than the black in a universal settings. I think a grey would help my 17 blend in better than the black.  I find the black actually shows movement more than tans or greys.

That looks GREAT

It really does break up the gun. If you stepped back 50 yards and took a pick, I bet people would have a hard time finding the rifle.
Nice green colors like that tifosi that should look nice.

Unless you live in an area where there is almost nothing but brown, I don't think either would be effective.

If you are just looking for a pattern, either would be unusual.

i think depending on were you lived you could paint your gun brown or green and it would work fine.  i think the snake idea is very cool, but some good points were made about thats ground cover and your probably not gonna be belly crawling all that much. i think the top one is the coolest though

I've dealt with many a copperhead and lemme tell ya, you can't see those SOBs till it's too late. I would definatly go with that pattern. I've always wanted to do a real snake pattern, so I'd love to see yours when you get done, no matter what pattern you pick.

Great pics too! I couldn't see half the copper head at first

Both look very cool. I'm also partial to the Copperhead.
What method and materials do you plan to use?
The hydrogrgraphics process looks  seriously awsome!!
Post some pics when you're done.

Thanks for the comments guys.

I agree that either of these patterns is most effective when on the forest floor. (Hence that's where the snakes live). So firing in a prone position, amongst dried leaves, would be ideal.

However, at this point in time, tactical effectiveness is not a primary concern. I'm more looking to do a refinish exercise.

The copperhead may be the best to start out with, since it has fewer colors and simplier shapes.

I think the geometric pattern of the Gaboon would look awesome on an AR, but as a first time paint job, it could prove very difficult to effectively replicate.

Also, the camo effect of both of these snakes is amplified when they are coiled up, as opposed to stretched out. How does that translate to a rifle? I don't know.

Cowboy7243001, You're right. Anyone who hasn't experienced a CH in the wild can't understand how incredible effective their camo actually is!

I will most definitely post pics of the finished product, but I'm not putting a timeline on it. I tend to work slow and methodically!

Me either, my first thought was we are looking at leaves on the ground...

I know that I have cursed the excellent camo on those damn copperheads a few times myself.
Those little f*&kers seem to just pop out of nowhere.  Thankfully I've never been bitten.

Anyway, thats my vote and.......TAG for pics.

Another vote from the SE goes for the copper head.  I think either would be cool though, I too am interested to see how the "non-coiling ability" of an AR has an affect on the effectiveness of the pattern.  Those pictures of the snakes just remind you of how incredible nature is.  Those pics take my breath away, escpecially after dealing w/ copper heads on numerous occassions.  Love it.
