The stock I purchased was advertised as including the spanner wrench but I didnt see it floating around in the little bag. Is it common for stocks to include the spanner wrench? Is there anything else that I may have around the house that will work?

You got a strap wrench laying around the house? I've used one for two builds, also broke it removing a stock too. You just can't beat Craftsman's warranty, no questions asked "Here's your new strap wrench, sir. Thank you."

I have since ponied up the cash for the right tool, a DPMS Multi-tool.
