I had a SIR #45 military for the longest, it was a great unit but the width was a bit much for my taste so when the #50 slim line came out, I was pretty excited but did not want to take my gun apart to install the delta ring so I waited for a new SIR version that combine the slim line I like so much, the bi-level for my EOTech and it is in the military format. well, the wait is over with the introduction of the SIR #58MOD. I promptly sold my #45 and order my 58 from Wes. great service and a great guy to deal with as all of you have known for awhile.

Here is some pictures.

Looks great Chen, as usual. I'm just in love with my #58MOD as well.

The pin is there because the original SIR has a seperate rail for the front section and current location for the front rail is occupied by the PEQ2 mount. if you don't want a bi-level, you can always mount the rail from the SIR #45 on it to creat a same plain rail for your weapon. Hawkeye, I like your background. [;)]

As usual excellen taste Chen. Here's my #58MOD w/ an ARMS #50SC riser/adapter rail, for a #50, before an EOTech went on it. It's similar in application to the #45 rail Chen spoke of, but has no PEQ2 mt. on the under side. I don't use the rail on the #58MOD, because it adds weight I don't need, but I through it on their because it came into discussion.

Is it an easy install? Since it's an M, I think you need to cut off the D ring. Do you have to remove the FSB?
Link Posted: 11/19/2003 3:04:28 AM EDT
Not the base/sight assy. but the cap yes.
Link Posted: 11/19/2003 4:18:38 AM EDT
It is a somewhat easy install. Hardest part will be dremeling the delta ring and the handgaurd cap. Once you snip those two peices, everything will go on like butter. No problems. If you so choose, you can remove the front sight base and then remove the handgaurd cap, delta ringe, snap cap and weld spring, but I found cutting the dleta ring and handgaurd cap much simpler. They are inexpensive parts. If you would rather not do any of that work, just get any C model SIR like the #45, #46 or #50. The C models will justdrop right on any flat top. ARMS has said all SIR models will eventually be available in both M and C models, but they just dont know when this #58mod will be available as a C model. I do love the #58mod though, it is clearly my favorite SIR. Its great!

But even if they make a C, I still have to remove the handguard cap with this particular(ly cool) model, right?

Yup...[:|] I think it would be better to make a front piece add-on for the SIR 50 that will go around the handguard cap without touching it. It might look a little different than the 50-Mod but it would be just as good and keep the weapon configuration intact.

Jimbo, for awhile, I prefer the MRE over the sir #45, But with the new #58, I am not sure, it will take some field time to get use to the new setup and see the outcome. for now the ability of the SIr to be disassemble with ease is a big plus.

I don't see why the front hand guard cap would have to be removed to install a #58MOD, the opening should be able to go around it. Someone needs to try that. Good shootin, Jack

No good Jack, way too tight.

I was kind of thinking the same thing as Jack. Why exactly won't the 58MOD front extension fit around a handguard cap? Also, looking closer ar the front extension piece I would wouldn't a whole one piece railed lower half for the SIR 50 that extends out like the 58MOD![:D] That would also pull the rails closer to the barrel as can be seen in Chen's third picture. It also looks like the machined 6 o'clock rail on the extension has a wider base section and the Tangodown vertical grip should fit without any modification unlike the standard add on rails....Hmmmmm...I'm dreaming again....[:D]

Green's AR works because you have a mid length, but what happen with the carbine length upper is the space is too tight. I tried as suggested by Jack but the top section of the SIR just won't fit with the cap in place.

I concur with everyone, I didnt remove my handgaurd cap because I wanted to, I removed it because to my knowledge, there was no way the #58mod was going to be installed with it still intact. With the choice set before me of retaining my handgaurd cap and not being able to use the #58mod... or removing the handgaurd cap and using the #58mod, I probably set the worlds record for speed snipping the handgaurd cap off. Dont miss it a bit and will enjoy the added airflow. The delta ring is gone already, so its not like I was going to put normal handgaurds back on. The cap is good for a brushgaurd, but in my opinion, I will enjoy the benefits of better cooling and air flow more often than I will have the need for a brushgaurd.

What I find interesting about this thread is that I do not see anything mounted on this wonderful (added weight to the muzzle) extension? Is all the swooning for this model simply because it’s the "latest and greatest model" or is it actually for the improved utility?

More room to place flashlights in the right place to interact with mid to forward mounting the verticle foregrip. In heavy rapid fire, or full auto, the front sight acts as somewhat of a heat sink. Not putting you in contact with that is a good thing.
Link Posted: 11/24/2003 3:12:22 AM EDT
For me, something that does something anything before it could not, without compromising much, if anything at all, is a good thing. The #58mod has the ability to do things no other carbine length SIR could. This is why it is my favorite one, even if the set up I currently use may not take advantage of everything it offers, at least it offers it!

I got it because this can replace the SIR #45 I have which I find to be a bit wide and the bi-level on the new 58 is another plus for an EOTech user like me. the added apace up front does place a protective shroud around my PRI front sight.

AKM: I think the photographers leave the gear off the forend so we have a clear view of the product in questions.
