Did the 601 use the grenade clip (mounts behind flash hider?

If so, was there a certain sight for the grenade?

Ive got a few of those.
The sight is a part I need.

From what i study it is a clip on version. I cannot find the ## or name. I would assume the name starts with M and has some #'s in it

I think that type of grenade launcher was used like a mortar and not really aimed

The only rifle grenade sight I know of was for the Energa Grenade, it clipped on cast sight bases only. Much later, the Israelis had a sight for their rifle grenades. See if you can find WillP's website, he has some great info there.

Above is correct. The energa site was "clipped onto the front of the FSB.It only fits the cast FSB as on the 601,602 etc.To view the complete correct setup, view here:

Just an FYI if you're thinking of buying, while scannig thru GB to find those, there was one that looked like the top one in the 3 sight auction for much cheaper, think it had the same 68 date too,but I was in a hurry to get back here. I typed "grenade site" and clicked "in titles and descriptions"

Early 1960's sales brochure shows the grenade launcher sight.

The "known" M16 grenade launcher sights are:
1) Colt 'clip on" front sight, these are marked Colt-Armalite & have a Colt part number, they were delivered w/the 601 & possibly some 602's to the AF & Army, they are meant for the Mecar "Energa" rifle grenade (they're actually marked Energa on them), that's the one that the spring clip on the muzzle is for. These are the grenade launcher sights that are in the early Colt catalogs & the original AF manual for the 601.
2) XM148 launcher sight, this is a seperate sight that attaches to the side of the XM148 launcher itself.
3) M203 launcher sight, these have a seperate front sight that attaches to the M203 HG & a rear sight that attaches to the carry-handle, I've never seen a 203 on flat top upper w/a sight so don't have any idea how one would attach (before someone asks LOL!), there are M203 HG's w/the F sight attachment for the M16A2/A3/A4 & the M4/M4A1.
These are the only US military used grenade launcher sights that I've found listed in manuals, 1962, 1964, 1966, 1968, 1972, 1977, 1983, 1984, 1995, 2001, 2008 are the manual dates I have & have checked thru, they cover the 601 thru the current issue guns.
Early in the M16's service life the US military did have a number of rifle grenades "in stock" besides the Mecar "Energa", the training models of some of those other grenades came w/a training sight in the box w/the trainer grenade. Possibly the sights shown in that aucton may be those but I don't know about the longer piece, from what I've read/found the trainer grenade sights were similiar to the Colt Energa sight & clipped on, they appear to have been "disposable" items that were discarded when the trainer was fired.
There was very litlte use made of rifle grenades w/the M16 as by the time it was in general service the Army had already issued the M79 & the XM148 came into service around 1965-66 soon superceded by the M203. I don't know what the sights are that are shown in that auction but I don't think they're US military unless they're the training sights, possibly either foreign mfg or a contract for a foreign military as other than the 3 mentioned above there's no mention in any US military manuals of grenade/launcher sights.

If you mean the standard quadrant sights, and the attachment of the sights to the detachable flat-top carry handle, then they attach the same or at least a similar way.  Bushmaster offers these quadrant sights for both the A2 and A3 carry handle, with the warning that they are not interchangeable.

No, I meant w/o a carry handle attached, I don't think they can be used w/o the carry handle. I don't know what Bushmasters sights are like as I was talking strictly about US military issue items. The US military uses the same rear sight for the rifles, A2, A3, A4, the sight fits all the rifles & the carbines. The A2 is a fixed carry handle w/burst FCG, the A3 uses a fixed carryhandle w/ full auto FCG, the A4 uses a detachable handle w/burst FCG, the same grenade launcher rear sight fits all, the detachable carry handles are the same also, the A4, M4 & M4A1 all use the same detachable carry handle & same rear grenade sight. Maybe Bushmaster uses different id's for their own models.

I'm thinking that the sight itself is the same but the mounts are different.

As far as I know the Bushmaster rear sights are standard USGI parts.  The different mounts probably have to do with clearing the knobs on the detachable handles or dealing with the different hight in the open portion of the handle between the A2 and A4 styles.

The sights pictured aren't rear sights, they are complete quadrant sights.  They've got a post and a peep, you set the range on the scale, put the sights on the target, and fire.  With the leaf sight, it serves as a replacement rear sight used in combination with the front sight post.  IIRC, the quadrant sight is used for more accurate and longer ranged fire while the leaf sight serves as "Hurry up and shoot" sights.

(1) Aligning sight. When using the leaf sight, align it with the front sight post of the M16. When using the quadrant sight, align its rear sight aperture with its front sight post. Picture a horizontal line through the center of the leaf sight or rear sight aperture. The top of the M16's front sight post should touch this line. Picture a vertical line through the center of the leaf sight or rear sight aperture. This line should vertically dissect the front sight post (Figure 5-9).
