I worked all summer long hauling hay when I was 15 to get my dad to buy me an AR-15 (this was in 1986).  What I got was a new SP1, just like the one my cousin had.  I still have the lower and the bolt carrier group, but the gun is now a CAR with a Bushy upper.  I was watching some movies the other day (it was raining) and in those particular movies were a bunch of m-16 A1/SP1s and it made me long for my SP1 in its original form.  I wish Colt or Bushmaster would decide to go retro and re-introduce a SP1 type rifle after the ban ends, kinda like what Colt has done with the Series 70 1911.  I doubt this will happen.  If the ban does end I'll probably buy a lower for my CAR and restore my SP1 to original form.  Would any of ya'll buy an A1 type rifle if it were offered?  Just curious.

Fulton-Armory makes one, the Legacy. I'm not sure if it uses a slabside lower or not.

Thanks Stryfe.  Do you know if it is a chrome lined Mil-spec barrel?  Also, Slab side isn't a big deal since I will probably use my old SP1 lower.

It is a chrome lined genuine military A1 barrel.

You can buy brand new SP1 uppers for $399 (or sometimes less) from a number of vendors. Have you considered just buying an SP1 upper and slapping it on your lower when you feel the need?

I highly doubt the slabside lower would make a comeback...but I do share your taste for lighter/simplier ARs. Being a huge fan of the 6551 and SP1, I would hope that Colt and others would make 20inch lightweight ARs. If not...we can always make them ourselves.

You'll be able to build one for less than 600 come september.
But it is nice seeing those prices go down. I'd like to get an SP1, but not that badly.

As a lefty I wouldn't be interested in a slick-side upper. No brass deflector being the biggest reason.

I built an extra Colt SP-1 upper a few years ago.
I got the uper receiver on ar15.com equipment exchange.
I got the COLT 1:12 M16A1 barrel from SARCO.
I retired the orginial upper as a dedicated 22LR upper.

It was actually a trade for another pistol, but there was only the one.  It is in fantastic shape, and cleaned up well after being left dirty for many years.

Stick is a LEO. In the future, you might want to find these things out before you post and get your daily affirmation as being a shill for the ATFE and the VPC. This may come as a shock to you, but there are lots of LEOs who post here, and not all of them advertise their chosen profession.

There is an "IM User" button next to every username for a reason...

Hopefully you see this message before you finish firing off your e-mail to the feds. You can also tell the 911 operator that it was a false alarm.

CJan_NH,

Thankyou, there are more than a few of us who are LEO around here, and while it may be hard for some people to believe, we are actually Pro-People/ Pro-Gun.

Here is another SP-1 picture with a "postban eveil" magazine...

PS- You were much nicer about it than I was going to be!!

In a few months any of us can own those mags...hopefully.
