How often are barrels replaced on military issue M16s & M4s? I assume M16s issued in basic training are shot quite a bit. What about M16s and M4s issued in the field? How often is headspace and throat erosion checked? I am just curious if a rounds-fired estimate is kept on each weapon and if barrels are routinely changed.

After deployments or a specified time, we had civilian armorers (usually ex-military) who would come in and check all of our weapons (machine guns, rifles, and pistols) for all headspace and timing plus whatever other checks they do, any weapons that do not test to spec are deadlined until replaced or new parts are installed.

ETA:  An armorer could answer this question better.

There is an annual inspection requirement for all issued weapons. Gaging determines the need for replacement of barrels and other components. Many others are visually inspected.

Everything is TI'd before deployment, too.

And after.
