ETA:update 08/25/05

I'm bored.

So I took the Handguards off my carbine... the aluminum peices are the heatshield, right?

Anyways, my dad has all kinds of bandsaws, lathes, etc and I've got so much freakin Mesquite that isn't suitable for furniture (too small) but would probably make good carbine HGs.

Where can I get just the metal heatshields?  Thats the piece I don't think I could make on my own (at least not of a decent quality anyways).

I'll post pics when I actually get started.

This is actually my second attempt.  Basically identical except it was a smaller diameter and had NO bug burrow holes in it.  I neglected to take pics of it :/  Its out at a friend's shop who has a 3 jaw chuck to hold the end while he drills a hole through it.

I'll post more progress when I get the first one back and finish it.

Bumped a 100 round drum in 2-3 nice segments in my bro's MAK...handguard melted, and slowly oozed from the rifle to the ground. Perhaps some sort of heat shield is in order? (removes tinfoil helmet and fashions new handguard)

AKs dont have heatshields in the wood, you should be fine without

Well, thats how I hope they write it.

I bumpfire my MAK90 by the drum and I have yet to catch them on fire.

I wouldn't use mesquite as a handguard...no more than I'd use pine.

Use a solid, hard wood...

Also, eschew the hardguards. They'll collect the heat (which is fine with polymer), but it'll probably char the wood where it touches.

Probably better to run it as-is, and let the heat dissapate naturally.  Hopefully it's an HBAR

I wouldn't be doing Beta C-Mag dumps in it

I haven't had my AK wood catch fire exactily, but I've certainly made it smoke, the inside is a little charred, and the laminate has bubbled all over the place...

Bumpfiring 4 30 round mags will do that...

(old Norinco 7.62x39 AK, replaced the Chinese furniture with Soviet/Russian AKM furniture..)

Mesquite is a hardwood.  People use it in furniture construction all the time.  Looks great if you can find a big enough piece to use.  Hell, I've seen guitars that had mesquite sides...

I wanted to do wood handguards for looks.  Also I was going to eventually try making a mesquite stock, too.

Ok, I still haven't gotten my first HG back, so no progress on that yet...

But!  I decided since I was making a mesquite HG I might as well make the rest of the furniture to match!

Heres what I've done on that so far:

Chunk of wood.

Bandsawed into a rough stock:

And PG:

Both sanded flat:

Next I used an oscillating spindle sander to round em both up:

I'm definitely admiring your handiwork.  There was an article on wood furniture in the last "Book of the AR15" and I thought it looked great.  I don't recall what wood they used, but they didn't mention anything about catching fire or dying a horrible death....so you should be good to go. :)

Were I doing it, I would cut the notch for the grip and bore the buffertube hole before I rounded the pieces out too much more.

What type of finish are you thinking about using?  Would an oil finish prevent water damage without bubbling out when the barrel heats up?  I love oiled wood finishes.

I'm jealous and seriously wishing I had some woodworking tools!  Congrats on this one, hoss.

Yeah, I actually need to work on the stock a bit more.  Maybe deepen the curve on the front portion.  Maybe the PG too.  Tomorrow is going to be interesting trying to drill the buffer tube hole with my dad's drill press...

The PG might end up looking a little funny once its installed on the gun because I deliberately made it slightly oversized.  My fingers are a kind of long and the regular A2 PG makes shooting a little uncomfortable.

I got my first HG back, but I don't know if I'll post pics of it.   The pithwood just ran too deep on one side for me to lathe it all off, so one side doesn't look very good.

As a matter of fact I was thinking about an oil finish.  Mesquite has such a beautiful grain to it, it would be a shame to cover it up with a really dark finish.  I think I'll use the first HG to test different finishes out on.  Maybe put 4 or 5 different finishes on it in sections and then put it on the gun to see which looks the best.

Okie, little more progress done.

I wasn't really able to drill a hole straight through the stock, so I cut it in half and used a router instead.

Cut in half:

Mr Router:

Rounded bit to smooth it up.

After hand sanding the inside:

I'm gonna glue it up tonight and we'll see what happens.

More than I care to think about.

Oh yeah, and here's the completed PG (minus oil/varnish)

The slice on the right is back from the beginning when I rought cut the PG out of a chunk of wood.  Same peice of wood.  The stain is a linseed oil based wood stain from back in the 70's.

That's probably what I'm going to use.  What do you guys think?  Too dark?  Too light?
