Used them on my m1a and ar15. They absorb oil/dirt great. They strip your gun of any oil when you wipe them.

They're cheap too. :)

yup...and regular small-cell sponges cut to size work well for applying lubricant that isn't dripping.

wow i thought i was the only one that used these on firearms!

what i do is i take one of the hoppes plastic eyelet patch holders, cut open the tip of the eyelet and use that as a clamp to hold the sponge on a cleaning rod, works great in the locking lugs in an AR and bolt actions

If sponges work for cleaning for you, more power to you. After a long range day or weekend shoot, I use a cold chisel and hammer.
