I was told there was information here regarding this topic but since I cannot seem to get the search feature to go back further than 30 days I will have to ask. Can a person legally put a Magpul angled grip on an AR pistol? I was told it was reported on this site that you can since the law only prohibits vertical grips on the front end. I was also told by an ATF guy I spoke to that he believes you can also but he would not commit too strongly. I want to make sure it is legal before I buy one. Any info is appreciated.

I've seen a few out at our local ranges and they all are using it since they say the same thing you do.  I don't have one nor do I plan on making one so I never really pay that much attention to them.

Yes it's legal.  The letter from the ATF has been posted here several times.

Ok, I can't get the darn thing to make a URL so here is what I have cut and pasted.

Letter:

and the link was provided in the sticky on the first page about letters from the ATF concerning AR type pistols.

I keep trying to find more info on the subject because I want one for my pistol. I cannot find anything concrete enough to give me piece of mind so far. There is the ATF reply letter that was posted here which certainly claims its ok.

I see lots of people now with pictures of AFGs on their pistols but lots of people still don't do it for fear. I found where someone posted a supposed official ATF article from its own website that was titled specifically for "Vertical Grips" Now if you ask me, the AFG is NOT a "Vertical grip"....if it was vertical, it would have been called the VFG and would be a 90 degree angle from the bore when mounted. I don't know that some radical person will try to claim that its vertical because its mounted to the bottom at 6 o'clock as opposed to a horizontal grip mounted at 3 or 9 o'clock .  I don't know who it is that decides what vertical grip even means.

Well, since vertical would have a concrete definition as being perpendicular to the plane of the horizon or to a primary axis the Magpul grip is definitely not vertical.

It doesn't reach that 26" mark by a long shot. If it did I would just put a vertical grip on it like the ones the ATF is allowing a certain manufacturer to produce. In fact I plan on making a 26" long one as soon as I finish my AR10 rebuild.
