On Sept 22 - 23 I hosted Larry Vickers for a Vickers Tactical Carbine Course ( www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=9&f=19&t=226830 ). In attendence was Drake from www.magpul.com
One of the items that Drake had on hand was the Magpul MOE 2 piece plastic handguards for the M4 carbine length gas system. The MOE handguards are innovative, lightweight, economical (if I remember correctly around $25), modular handguard, that offer features that offer many features that standard plastic handguards don't. Typical Magpul gear....what else would you expect. At first glance you may think that they are just another set of plastic handguards (that was my initial impression) until I took a closer look at them. MOE handguards on Drake's Colt lightweight LE Carbine: Right side: Bottom: Top: Left side: The MOE install like standard plastic handguards: Standard AR15 / M4 handguards have a series of holes at the 12 and 6 o'clock position to let heat escape and aid in cooling (2 sets of cooling holes). The MOE handguards has 6 sets of cooling vents. The cooling vents also act as anchor points to mount accessory rails. I found that the plastic of the MOE to be thick and didn't feel brittle. The material also felt as if it would handle heat well. Initially I though the extended front of the handguard that wraps partially around the front sight base looked a little funny, but I know several guys that hold extreemly far forward on the M4 handguards, and this would help prevent your hand coming in contact with the front sight base. I saw Drake go through several drills with the MOE handguards (most of them in the late afternoon when the temp was in the high 80's / 90 degrees) and saw no issues relating to heat. I was extreemly impressed with the MOE handguards and they definatley fill a niche in the market. It's an awesome alternative for someone who just wants to attach a light to their carbine, for a law enforcement agency that is limited by budget, etc. After seeing the MOE handguards in the class I would run them on my personal carbine without hesitation. Magpul doesn't give estimated release dates on their new products anymore and I don't know when they will be released Now if they would just make them in a mid-length version ;) |

I really like that they cover up some of the FSB. I've gotten burned there a couple of times.
I also don't like the added weight of the aluminum handguards. These look like they'll be a little bit heavier than the M4. A couple ounces is not bad but I really don't want something that will add a quarter pound of weight. |
looks cool. i'll probably have to try 'em out.
thanks for posting. |
Magpul is very market aware, so I would amazed if they didn't come up with a midlength version. As soon as they do, I am ordering a set! |
I need two carbine and two midlength.
Tell Magpul to send a couple over to Brownells with my name on them. |
Looks like a great replacement for the standard plastic!
Great price too! |
They have the molds, materials, and they have customer demand.
What's the hold-up here? They need to hurry along with this. I'm about the do my last 2 builds, and I'd like to use a complete set of Magpul furniture and a color matched duracoat. UDE would be awesome.... |
I like the look. What were the mounting accessory rails in the pics?
I just want a VFG and nothing else up front, so this is the perfect solution without adding any weight with just one lower rail for a bargain price. If I get a FDE CTR, I may have to get a FDE top with bottom black handguard Even if it takes two it's still dirt cheap.
my carbines are midlength....so
I'll have to wait until they make these available.... |
So can we actually get these now? Ive been waiting forever for them.
I'd be interested in a rifle length set. My only carbine is a midlength, and my DD Omega isn't coming off of it.

This question was posted in another thread on these hanguards, but I believe is as yet unanswered:
I was wondering the same thing myself ... any thoughts ? Thanks Jeff. |
Along those same lines, would this interfere with the MX light mount from Midwest Industries? It secures to the front sight and the Magpul guards look too long in front.

Sorry, but I think they are rather gross looking. Look like plastic blobs slapped on the front of the rifle.
I can't comment as the only gun that I saw the MOE handguards on is what is pictured above. I didn't even think to get a couple shots of the front. Maybe someone from Magpul will chime in. |

I think it would take me a little while to get used to the look of those.
I agree. While those are pretty innovative, something should be done about the aesthetics. |
I'd like them to look more contoured, and not as wide. I's still be interested in a rifle length set. |
i am in the same boat. i like the look of most Magpul products but this one just doesn't appeal to me. i do like the concept though. |
Let's see. They have other products they are working on, including You can't rush quality.
I disagree. They look similar to the FAL handguards,, and it's a nice look to me. |

Thanks....I will be all over it. Magpul gets it right. This is what the AR/M4 should have always had.
I have the MOE stock and love it. |
Yep, it works for me too! I'd be in for a set in midlength and, as somebody mentioned in another thread, these might be just the ticket (in rifle length) for police departments with DRMO M16A1s. |

One of the few companies that I know off that only makes quality gear. Maybe they look like ass to you or maybe not (that's an individual thing) but there is no doubt in my mind that they are a quality option. From what I can tell by the pics, there are a few details about them that I personally don't care for either but I do know 2 things for sure... 1. You usually can't fully judge a product until you have actually used it and 2. Magpul put a lot of thought and research into these. You can almost guarantee every aspect\detail of these was done for a reason and serves some purpose. Whether or not those details\purposes work for you and the way you use your AR is for you to determine. I have been saying for years now that rails are a waste of money for most people and the way they use their AR's. My biggest issue with them is I don't feel they offer enough utility (for the average use\user) to justify the cost and added weight. Most of the one piece rails are very expensive and are a pain to install. Most of the 2 piece designs are too fat and heavy and in some cases, still required you to modify your weapon to install them. DD solved a lot of those issues IMO with the Omega rail but it's still not cheap and its pretty hard to justify a $225-$250 Omega rail against one of these at only ~$25 if all your mounting is a light or maybe a VFG. Ugly or not, I'm sure these MOE hand guards will prove to be a very nice option, especially for those with people with more common sense then money. Just my $.02 on it |

I love MagPul gear but what's all the rage about these particular handguards?

How deep did you have to dig to find this thread? Someone had to bump it, or we would forget to tell our as-yet-unborn children to keep an eye out for them being released sometime around the time they can legally purchase their first AR's.... These are apparently going to be two incredibly amazing pieces of plastic. |
