I'm thinking about making my AR into an M-16.  Is there a reliability difference or anything with the M-16's extra metal on the bolt carrier?  Or is the AR configuration better?

you can't just *make* your AR into an M16. that's been 100% illegal since 1986, unless you buy a DIAS that was made and tax paid before then. those are running in the tens-of-thousands-of dollars though.

lots of people do M16 carriers in their *semi-auto* AR's. i do. it's thought that the "extra metal" adds enough mass to make the weapon more reliable.

Conventional wisdom says the M16 carrier will provide more reliable function, more solid follow up shots, and generally a better choice

The differences are subtle, but many will go a long way for that extra one-half of one percent improvement

They will function exactly the same in an AR15.  I defy anyone to prove otherwise.

true, but there is usually little or no price difference between an AR BCG and an M-16 BCG.

if you are going to put one of each in fornt of me, and make them the same price, i'll take the 16 BCG since i'm getting that 1/2% for 0% more.

Amen. If your rifle is not cycling reliably, the problem IS NOT the BCG! (Unless the gas key is loose...)

Um, if at work you have auto lowers or your friend at the range or whatever, then you could put your upper on that lower if you had a m16 BC.  But no there is not a huge difference.  The m16 carrier has more mass, kinda like using a heavyer buffer, but its so little more I dont think it matters.

= buy what you find cheap.

by "make" i was referring to obtaining a Class3 and slapping it on a full auto lower.  And if that doesn't work out i'll probably just put the carrier in my AR.  I have never seen anybody walking around the range opening AR's and checking the parts.  Hell i've seen police getting M-16 parts for people at the range, people with no class 3 or form4

Take a look at all the posts complaining about the notched hammer of the AR15 catching the collar of the firing pin and either causing malfunctions or just bending the snot out of the firing pin retaining pin, eating up the firing pin collar, etc.

That won't happen with an M16 carrier because it has a shrouded firing pin (as do the "Enhanced" AR15 bolt carriers).
