Which hand-guard is a better insulator of barrel heat, the MAGPUL MOE or a Standard M4 Hand-guard?

MOE, i made it through eh four mags before the M4 handguards began to get uncomfortable... the MOE guards stay luke warm with the same round count.

I had the moe on my m4type carbine. When I ran my surpressor the moe hand guards got to hot. I went back to the old double heat shield m4 handgaurds and never looked back. I do love the moe rifle handgaurds I I use t them on both of my 20 inch builds.

I agree, the oval shaped double heatshield handguard is better at insulating from heat.  But the MOE feels better - at least to me.

I suspect that the MOE may facilitate cooling better than the standard, but the cooling effect of the escaping heat tends to warm the hand more. Almost a catch .22.

Good ol glacier glacier guards do pretty good. I used to have them before I went to quad rail set up

I have not tried them side by side, but I would guess that the standard m4 offers better heat insulation.

The reason is that with the m4, it's a double heat shield which effectively covers all 360 degrees of the barrel.

The Magpul MOE only covers probably close to 300 degrees of coverage, in my estemate. There is a gap at the top where there is no heat shield. Based on this, I would think that the 12 o'clock position would get the hottest the fastest. I think that the other protions would heat up just as fast as the areas on the m4.

I agree.  I went back to M4 handguards on my carbines.  To me, they keep cooler and fill my hand better.  I love the MOE in rifle length, though.

personal preference, I used a Colt M4 hand guard for many years until I wanted to try out the MOE. I still have the M4s in the closet if I want to swap back.

M4s all the way around, I ditched the MOE. I like the MOE grips but the handguards had to go.

This confirms my suspicions. The MOE may heat up the support hand quicker than the standard hand-guard, but it enables the barrel to cool faster by dissipating the heat through the vent holes. I guess I will just get some gloves or a vertical grip.

MOE handguards are just ugly... I don't understand how the double heat sheilded handguard actually heated up after they were done firing?

Second law of thermodynamics.

They were done firing, but the barrel is still hot. Specifically, it's still hotter than the handguards, and thus the handguards will still heat.

The double heat shield m4 hand guards are hard to beat.  I haven't used the glacier guard but I hear they are gtg. I don't care for MOE stuff at all.  It's your money and unless you do a lot of mag dumps it doesn't make a lot of difference.

The MOE HG's seem to heat up more than the M4's , but I still like the feel of the Magpul much better.

Obviously... thank you that was a complete fail on my part.  I do like the double heat shielded handguards tho.

I'm wondering if it may be better to run a Moe without a heat shield at all. It may heat up quicker, but it has so many holes for ventilation. I'm using a Moe without any shields and I bought a laser thermometer to do some testing, but I have to make more time.

M4 handguards and set of glove I could keep sustained fire all day and not get hot handsi use standard handuards on my DI and Osprey equipped uppers.

I have magpul on my fa carbine and I dont really have any heat issues to speak of when shooting in 3-5 shot burst  for several magazines . I dont do 30 round mag dumps very often because it just waste ammo and usually misses the intended target .

The guy from Vuurwapenblog actually did a scientific test on heat dissipation/retention with various types of 2-piece handguards. I don't have a link handy but you could probably find it very quickly through Google.

ETA: Oops, I see it's been posted already. I didn't see it at first because it wasn't a hotlink.
