While perusing thru a website one of our members, (and close Friend) recently turned me on to, I came across this lil "gem". The bottom one with with the sections taped (unused) I already had, the top one just arrived today. Unfortunately the bristle brush is not correct both in length and thread count. Oh well,,, I'll just have to live with it.
For those who don't know, they are the early lightweight cleaning rods issued specifically with the Colt model 601.

M1Sniper the brush on the rod set on the bottom I would say is original and probably same as mine, thread is 8/32.

"Lightweight" = aluminum instead of the steel that all of the other six varieties of Colt cleaning rods are made of

Ummmm,,, yeah,,, back in 1964 I guess they thought so. If you read the tag on my unfired NOS SP1 birthdate Nov 16, 1964,,, the "toe tag" DOES say "self cleaning gas system."

10-4, thanks Kobren. I'll be on the hunt now for original GI 8/32 brushes just to have on hand.

Well it was MUCH cleaner before they changed the powder!

M1Sniper the same brushes were probably used with the following steel cleaning rods including the three piece knurled handle M11 cleaning rod, WillyP has photos of all the rods. Someone somewhere might have a boatload of these surplus early 8/32 brushes that were gradually phased out when they went to 8/36 thread rods/brushes, just a matter of finding that boat.

Congrats on the find, 'sniper!
The three longer rods are 7 7/8", right?  And if you put the slotted tip on the shorter rod, all four pieces will be about the same length.

Any luck on finding the bipod pouch to carry these?

Long rods are zackly 7 7/8ths, the short one with patch tip comes in at more like 7 11/16ths with patch tip, and  7 7/8ths with the correct brush from the unused set.
No luck on the early pouch,,, yet.

118x, born on Nov. 16,1964, left the Colt "nest" on Nov. 20,1964. The original owner also bought the accessories seen here, scope never mounted, bipod never mounted, bayo never mounted, sling never mounted. A real deal "virgin".

You're right. 1964 1/2 mustang was around $2,400 back then. Now what's it worth.

STILL it would be a great investment.

A pristine 1964 SP1 with all the original goodies could easily double your ("inflationarily" adjusted) money!
